Subject: Freshman
Advising Assessment, 2003
Advisors,
The fall 2003 assessment of freshman advising administered in
December through FYS is attached. 361 students responded. 97.8% knew the
name of their adviser! Though freshmen are required to meet with advisers
only twice during fall term (during orientation and spring registration), 37%
met with their advisers additional times. Nice percentages.
As in previous years, the results are positive. The
percentage of students who 'agree' or 'strongly agree' with most questions
continues to increase in small increments, just as the number who 'disagree' or
'strongly disagree' continues to decline. Individual advisers (88% agree) are
"on time for appointments" (#3) and (89% agree) keep "regular
advising hours" (#4). 84% agree that "my adviser seems
interested in helping me succeed academically" (#8).
We remain about the same in the two consistently low-scoring
"expectations" categories:
10. My adviser
explained what is expected of me. 34.3% disagreed.
11. My adviser
explained what I can expect from my adviser. 28.2 disagreed.
The high percentage of students who disagreed suggests that
these freshman advisees want to know what to expect from advisers as well as
what you expect from them. Annual planning is a time to make sure
they know!
Though we have positive responses in the high 70's for questions
5, 6 & 7, we do have a combined negative response of about 20% with taking
time to becoming acquainted (5), discussing academic goals (6) and providing
academic information (7).
