University of Minnesota, Morris Campus Resources & Planning Committee Minutes May 11, 1998 Members present: Andy Lopez, Lowell Rasmussen, Sara Haugen, Gwen Rudney, Jason Anderson, Jenny Dose, Jeff Ratliff-Crain, Maddy Maxeiner, Chris Wenner. Guests: Sam Schuman, Jeri Mullin, Dave Johnson, Fred Farrell. The meeting began with Maddy Maxeiner's comments concerning the minutes of 4/20/98. She reminded the committee that increasing fund raising goals requires increased resources (personnel) for fund-raising activities. Andy Lopez assured her that the vice chancellor group understood that concept when he reviewed the material with them earlier. The Physical Plant Subcommittee reported. They have met weekly to wrestle with space issues. Lowell Rasmussen emphasized that the campus will need to become adjusted to swing (temporary) space for several years. The following concepts resulted from their deliberations (summarized from email by Lowell Rasmussen): 1. A good objective would be to move those units and departments which deal with external campus clients to Community Services, and those units which deal with internal campus clients should be focused on the mall. [Jeri Mullin expressed concern about separating Admissions/Financial Aid from the Registrar's Office as they share paper files.] 2. The subcommittee recommends that Commission on Women, Womens Resource Center, and E-Quality be relocated from the PE Annex to the future dressing room area in the basement of the Student Center. It is understood that this is a temporary move and all affected parties have agreed to the recommendations. [Other possibilities explored and found unworkable included renting apartments for these groups.] 3. The subcommittee recommends that Alumni Relations and Fund Development be relocated to the HFA Plaza area...[temporarily]... until the Community Services Building is renovated. [Eventually] the HFA plaza offices will be used by Humanities. The existing Alumni area would be used by Human Resources to provide a more private access to faculty staff and students. 4. The subcommittee recommends relocation of the Science faculty annex to the site adjacent to the Humanities faculty annex. The site is the most cost effective location to get campus infrastructure to the Science Annex. It uses would be as follows: Fall 1998 -Fall 2000 Current faculty to stay in this building Fall 2000 Fall 2001 Geology/Physics Faculty displaced out of Old Science to use this space. Fall 2001 Fall 2002 University College and others displaced out of Community Services to use this facility. [Great concern was expressed about aesthetics and first impressions of parents and prospective students.] The CRPC voted to endorse items 1-3 and revisit item 4. The committee then discussed other priority space issues. The computer lab in Camden is woefully inadequate and has generated much concern. There is a need to reprioritize space on campus, using high quality spaces for teaching and low quality spaces for storage. There are privacy concerns surrounding the Health Services facility due to entry and exit traffic in that area. The subcommittee will continue its work. Other groups will report at later meetings. The CRPC will meet again on Monday, May 18, at 4 pm in the Behmler Conference Room.
