University of Minnesota, Morris Campus Resources & Planning Committee Minutes June 1, 1998 Members present: Gwen Rudney, Sara Haugen, Maddy Maxeiner, Jenny Dose, Chris Cole, Andy Lopez, Chris Wenner, Karen Fischer, Lowell Rasmussen, Jeff Ratliff-Crain, Lynn Schulz, Rod Oto. [12 out of 16] Guests: Jim Togeas, Tom McRoberts, Cathleen Brannen, Michael Korth, Gary McGrath, Sam Schuman. Jim Togeas visited the meeting to obtain endorsement and/or input about UMM's self-study for the NCA. The NCA steering committee recommends a special emphasis self-study over a comprehensive one. With its driving theme and short list of goals, it will be more useful for planning and for use by external groups like the Regents, central administration, legislators and citizens. Andy Lopez asked what risks are involved in preparing a special emphasis self-study instead of a comprehensive one. Togeas assured him that an endorsable document would be produced; otherwise it wouldn't even be attempted. Chris Cole asked how the eight concerns from 1990 would be addressed and Togeas responded, in the document's theme. Jeff Ratliff-Crain asked if the self-study reflected input from campus forums and Togeas confirmed, streamlined but maintaining the spirit. Lopez asked when the document would be sent to the NCA and Togeas answered this summer. Sara Haugen asked how staffing concerns would be addressed by the self-study and Togeas assured her that co-curricular essentials that impact student life would be identified as non-peripheral. Jeff Ratliff-Crain moved to endorse the Special Emphasis Self-Study approach proposed by the [NCA accreditation] Steering Committee. Lowell Rasmussen seconded the motion and the plan to prepare a Special Emphasis Self-Study was unanimously endorsed by all members present. Andy Lopez noted that Tom McRoberts will be writing the self-study. Cathleen Brannen reported good news about the budget. The tuition shortfall will be covered by a shortfall hedge and savings captured from thwarted searches. Funds for Gateway, women's soccer, and the Center for Small Towns will be added to the base operating budget. Andy Lopez asked whether the committee wished to take action on the reports of the Enrollment and Human Resources subcommittees. He explained that if the CRPC accepted their reports, it could choose next fall to review specific recommendations or charges in-depth. Ratliff-Crain made a motion to accept the two reports, Maddy Maxeiner seconded, and they were approved by vocal vote. The Physical Plant subcommittee will meet Thursday, 6/4, to discuss occupancy of the HFA plaza, winter 1999. The Budget subcommittee reviewed GenEdWeb and has sent a report. Rebecca Webb
