University of Minnesota, Morris Campus Resources & Planning Committee Minutes March 9, 1999 Members present: Andy Lopez, Ray Sibul, Don Kenning, Lowell Rasmussen, Tom Johnson, Karen Fischer, Rod Oto, Maddy Maxeiner, Nat Hart, Jenny Dose, Brenda Boever, Sara Haugen. Guests: Sam Schuman, Chris Wenner. Sam Schuman distributed the most recent draft of the Compact (dated 3/99). It is not yet final so there is still time to discuss it further. Andy Lopez requested a change in the minutes of 2/9/99 (which had been circulated in draft form only) concerning editorial corrections to the Three Year Plan. The minutes were officially circulated later in the day. Lopez presented a memo from Harold Hinds, chair of the Faculty Development Committee, requesting a recommendation of continuation for that adjunct committee. Nat Hart made such a motion and Maddy Maxeiner seconded it. Tom Johnson mentioned that Hinds' memo lack numbers detailing activity levels typical in such reports. Nat Hart responded that FDC minutes indicate substantial activity. Schuman confirmed that the FDC has in the past been asked to make recommendations on faculty leaves and will probably be asked to do so in the future when there are no conflicts of interest involved. The motion carried and the recommendation to continue the FDC will be forwarded to the Executive Committee. Sam Schuman previewed an 8 minute slide show describing UMM's strategic plan that will be presented to the Regents on Thursday, 3/11/99. The presentation mirrors the compact and stresses the need to address faculty set-ups, spousal employment, intercollegiate athletics, the Native American tuition waiver, and computer upgrades. Tom Johnson wondered if more should be said about our capital request but Schuman explained that the presentation avoided addressing "bricks and mortar" and focused, as requested, on undergraduate concerns. Hart wondered if the "two exciting new buildings" should be identified specifically. Rod Oto suggested mentioning the fierce competition for top students and our reliance of faculty teaching (as opposed to TAs). Hart mentioned the number of UMM faculty in the Distinguished Academy of Teaching. Jenny Dose wondered if we should mention our higher student satisfaction rate twice and Fischer wondered what percentage of our students study abroad during junior year. Schuman noted he still has time to alter the program before departing for the Twin Cities. The CRPC will meet varying Thursdays at 3 pm during spring quarter. The first two meetings will be April 1st in the Behmler Conference Room and April 22 in the Prairie Lounge.
