A Campus of Difference. . .Finding Common Ground
UMM Receives the Celebration of Diversity Award!At a conference of the IV-East Region of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in February, 1998, Chancellor Dave Johnson and representatives from the Campus of Difference Committee accepted the Celebration of Diversity Award. This award is given yearly to a campus which has "a successful record of achievement in celebrating a campus environment that is culturally diverse and accepting of differences through student development programming, personnel practices, equal opportunity, staff development activities, student support services, and actions designed to improve the campus climate for diversity."
The aspects of the UMM campus which were cited for this award included the campus's high minority enrollment of 15%, high retention and graduation rates of minority students, the Minority Student Program, the Gateway program, the Queer Issues Committee, the Commission on Women, and the Campus of Difference Initiative. Several of these aspects were presented and discussed at the conference in a session which was conducted by members of the C of D committee: Sarah Bell, Nyisha Burnett, Sunny Chung, Lori Koshork, Mike Miller, Ron Morris, Sandy Olson-Loy, Helene Sherley, and Becky Stolt.
