Faculty Affairs Committee Minutes (02-14-08)
Faculty Affairs Committee
Date: 02-14-08
Present: Stacey Parker Aronson, Bart Finzel, Tom Mahoney, Pam Solvie, Timna Wyckoff
Absent: Argie Manolis
The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m.
Jenny Nellis, Humanities Division Chair
As a follow-up to a previous meeting with the Director of Human Resources, the committee invited Humanities Division Chair Jenny Nellis to discuss some of the issues surrounding the complexity of the job classifications. She explained that Division Chairs negotiate such issues as tenure, job classifications, leaves. She believes that the university (not UMM) is trying to hold back having to pay retirement for any one it can. Therefore, job classifications enable it to do that.
Wyckoff asked her what she thought the FAC could do.
Nellis suggested that we make a report in which we take a position on the issue and discuss which component of campus are affected by the job classifications and how. Since the Sabbatical Replacement issues seem to be a common issue among all of the division, perhaps we can start there?
Mahoney concurred and suggested that the vision statement might include a statement about the value of job classifications to recruitment and retention.
Finzel wondered how job classification codes were/are being used on the TC Campus.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 p.m.
