Present: Mary Elizabeth Bezanson, Rebecca Dean, Athena Kildegaard, Judy Kuechle, Barry McQuarrie, Roger Wareham, James Wojtaszek, and guest Dean Cheryl Contant
The Dean began by presenting the possible permutations of CUPA data as a source of quantitative data for arguing in favor of higher salaries at UMM.
A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of these permutations ensued. The committee members and the Dean concluded that using the variety of comparative data (UMM campuses, MN public and private colleges, Morris 14, COPLAC, and AAUP or CUPA data) already compiled will be more than sufficient.
The discussion turned to the best means for developing a qualitative argument for higher salaries and it was agreed that we use the Accountability Report.
The committee discussed the use of data sets that include compensation plus benefits and making equivalent comparisons from that data.
Asked about the process going forward, the Dean noted that the budget request will go to the current iteration of the Budget Request Meeting. She observed that there are no guarantees, but without this argument before them early in the process there is likely to be no action. She noted that when the deficit has been reduced, we may likely be in a position to solve the problem of inadequate salaries.
Wareham and Dean agreed to continue working on a draft of the salary report to bring to the committee. Wojtaszek agreed to prepare a draft proposal regarding compensation for discipline coordinators, an idea which has been brought informally to the committee on several occasions.
Finally, the committee discussed the issue of teaching loads in the context of salary discussion. Wojtaszek suggested that, in anticipation of questions that might be raised in later discussions, that we compare teaching loads with the institutions in our comparison groups, in an attempt to make sure that as many factors as possible are comparable.
