TO: UMM Faculty
FROM: International Programs Committee (IPC)
SUBJECT: Faculty Grants to Internationalize UMM Courses
Deadline for applications: Friday, April 3, 2009
The IPC invites proposals from all faculty members for a grant to internationalize the UMM curriculum. The purpose of this grant is to help faculty members develop new courses with an international content or add to existing courses an international component or perspective. The IPC awards multiple grants of up to $1,500.
The grant may be used to subsidize a variety of expenses tied to curricular development projects, including (but not limited to) faculty salaries, the acquisition of educational materials, and the cost of travel for the purposes of research or to attend pertinent international exhibits or conferences. Joint proposals, including interdisciplinary ones, are welcome.
For example, Professor Sarah Buchanan was awarded $1,500 to supplement a University Grant-in-Aid in support of a trip to Paris to research new films to use in a new course on the literature and cinema of immigrants in France. Prof. Stacey Aronson was awarded $565 to purchase ancillary materials for Portuguese courses. Links to these successful applications are included on the IPC website.
The application should explain the work to be undertaken by any faculty member receiving a salary as well as the range of activities in which the resulting course will engage students. Requests should be as detailed as possible and demonstrate a clear relationship between the project and the proposed budget; the budget must clearly define how funds are to be expended.
Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria: the project's creativity and uniqueness, its timeline, and the number of students who will benefit from it. Proposals that will bring a long-term impact on the campus will be given priority.
Preference will be given to applications that seek to develop new and innovative courses rather than those that merely request subsidies for ongoing study abroad programs. The committee encourages proposals from disciplines that have been previously underrepresented.
Faculty should identify whether they are on tenure track or temporary appointments. Please note that only one proposal per candidate will be considered.
Downloadable applications are available at www.morris.umn.edu/committees/ipc. Hardcopy applications are available from the International Programs Office. Applications may be submitted to IPC member Pilar Eble by email ( eblep@morris.umn.edu ), by campus mail (IPC, 120 Blakely Hall) or brought to the IP office. The deadline for both hardcopy and electronic applications is Friday, April 3, 2009. Decisions will be announced in late April.
Questions may be directed to Pilar Eble at ext. 6408.
