Note circumstances where pages may be unlinked.
BACK-UP
Make a back-up of the page before making any changes.
BROWSERS
Page should be functional in the most recent and last few versions of
both Netscape and Internet Explorer. Pages that
do not work in both browsers may be unlinked or taken offline by the Webmaster
until they have been repaired.
PLATFORMS
Page should be functional on both Macintosh and PC. Pages that do not work on
both platforms may be unlinked or taken offline by the Webmaster until they
have been repaired.
Check your page on
Macintosh Netscape, Macintosh Internet Explorer,
PC Netscape, and PC Internet Explorer.
These platforms and browsers are available in Computing Services Labs and Education Room 6.
EDITING
When editing an existing page, maintain all pertinent information and design
elements in consultation with page owner.
GRAPHICS
Check all links and graphics.
IMAGE SIZE
Do not use height and width codes TO SCALE an image (make it display smaller
than it really is). USE PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE to make a picture smaller (Microsoft
photo editor, Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, Graphic Converter for Macs, etc. available
in all labs). Images that are too large may load too slowly; aim for 60k or
less per graphic. Once you've made your picture the right size, then
indicate its actual size in the height and width fields to maximize your
download speed.
MODEMS
Remember, many people are accessing pages by modems with slow
connections.
CONTENT
If you are using maroon or gold on your page, be aware that it is University
Relations policy to use #660000 for maroon and #FFCC33 for gold
(http://www1.umn.edu/tc/marks/images.html).
More information on web page guidelines can be found at
http://www.morris.umn.edu/cs/web/webpol.shtml.
OLDER PAGES
Archive out-of-date but important historical information with labeling at the
top of such pages that "This page is not current. For current info, go
here (insert appropriate URL)." Change your extension from .htm (or .html
or .shtml) to .old to prevent the page from turning up in searches.
SOFTWARE
If using Dreamweaver (or similar software), be aware that no one can update
your site but you. More to follow in this section.
These standards should not be confused with accessibility standards being
developed in compliance with federal regulations.
