Dial up Instructions for Macintosh 7.5 - 9.x

These instructions detail using PPP for Open Transport (included with all post-7.6 release of the Mac OS) to connect to the UMM modem pool.

Before you begin...

You should have the following items and information handy before you start installing and configuring software:

Installing Open Transport

PPP for Open Transport requires Open Transport (OT), version 1.1.1 or later. You can check to see if you have Open Transport, and the version that you have by following these steps:
  1. Go to the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and look for control panels named AppleTalk and TCP/IP.
  2. If you do not see AppleTalk or TCP/IP, but do see Networking or MacTCP, then you don't have OT but "classic" networking. See below to install OT.
  3. If you see AppleTalk or TCP/IP, open one of them, go to the File menu and choose Get Info. Your version of OT should be 1.1.1 or later.
If you need to install OT, read on. If you don't, you can jump to the section on Installing PPP or Configuring TCP/IP.
  1. You can obtain the latest version of OT directly from Apple. From this site you can copy OT onto (4) high-density floppy disks.
  2. Before installing OT on your Mac, you should remove MacTCP and the Networking control panels from your machine.
  3. Insert the first OT disk, and double-click the installer. Follow the prompts to install OT. You will have to restart your machine when the installation is finished.

Installing PPP

If you have the CD for System 7.6 or OS 8 or later, you can install PPP directly from the CD.
  1. Search your system for any SLIP or older PPP software and discard it.
  2. Insert the System 7.6 or 8.0 CD and double-click the CD icon to view the contents of the CD.
  3. Double-click the "Install MacOS" icon to start the installer.
  4. Click the "Install the Software" button
  5. Click the "Install Now" button
  6. Click the "Customize" button
  7. Deselect all checked boxes
  8. Select only the option for "Open Transport PPP 1.0"
  9. Click the "Start" button. The installer will check the hard disk for any problems; once this is finished, it will begin installation of OT PPP.

Configuring TCP/IP

  1. Open the TCP/IP control panel
  2. Select "PPP" for Connect via, and Configure "Using PPP server".
  3. Enter "146.57.57.57" as the primary entry and "128.101.101.101" as the secondary entry in the Name Server Address box.
  4. Enter "umn.edu" and "mrs.umn.edu" in the Search Domain box.
  5. Close TCP/IP, and save your changes.

Configuring PPP

  1. Open the PPP control panel and enter you username@cda (i.e. smithj@cda), password and the phone number 589-4526).

  2. Click on the Options button and select the Protocol tab.
  3. Select the option "Connect to a command-line host" and sub-option "Use terminal window." Click OK.

  4. Select Modem from the PPP menu which is located at the top of the screen. You will be shown a dialog box that you will use to set up your modem.
  5. Select your modem from the Modem list. If you do not see your modem listed try using the first modem listed (3Com Impact Analog 14.4). Select any other preferences you may have (i.e. pulse vs. touch tone) and close the modem dialog box. You will be returned to the PPP control panel.

  6. Click the Connect button in the PPP control panel. This will dial up the UMM modem pool. After it makes the connection, a terminal window will appear which prompts for your username and password.
  7. Before entering your username and password, press the "Settings" button at the bottom of the terminal window. Make sure that "Prompt to Save Script on Connect Close" is selected. Press "OK" to close the window.
  8. Now type your username and password at the proper prompts. The last prompt will be slip-server>, at which point you should enter "ppp". The terminal screen will look something like this: 
    Username: [username]
Password: [password] (will not show)
slip-server> ppp
    where [username] is your username (i.e. smithj@cda), and [password] is your password (please note that the password will not echo when you are entering it, so be sure to type carefully). If you get an % Access denied message, you have entered either your username or password incorrectly. Re-enter them at the next prompts.
  9. If you have successfully connected, the terminal window will close, and a window will appear for you to save the script. You will then be prompted for a file name, you should enter "UMM PPP" in the given box. Usually it will save the script in the "Control Panels" folder.
  10. Once connected, you will return to the PPP control panel. The original "Connect" button will have toggled to "Disconnect", and your connection time will be indicated in the Status area. Please note that the "Disconnect" button is not a prompt, but rather indicates that you are in fact connected. Only click this button when you want to end your modem session to UMM.
  11. To set it up to automatically log into the server, you will need to press the "Option" button in the PPP Control panel. Select "Use Connect Script" and press the "Import Script" button. You will then be prompted for a file name to which you should enter "UMM PPP", the file you created. Click "OK" in that window, and "OK" in the next window. When you close the control panel, you will be asked to save changes. Answer "Yes" to this prompt.
  12. The next time you connect to UMM, PPP will look for the script you saved and you will not have to reenter your settings.

Hanging up

  1. Open the PPP control panel.
  2. Click the Disconnect button. This should hang up your modem.
