UMM Procedures for Disposal of Computer Equipment
This page outlines procedures at UMM for the disposal of computer equipment (including monitors and printers) that are no longer needed in a department. These procedures follow
the University of Minnesota policy on Property, with Computing Services generally taking on some of the functions that are handled by Inventory Services at the Twin Cities campus.
Departments may sell equipment that is no longer needed. A Computing Services inspection is required to determine whether the equipment must first be offered for sale to other UMM departments, or whether the equipment should be removed from the network and therefore listed only for personal, off-campus sale. Sales must be made at fair market value either way.
Contact Computing Services (320-589-6391) for help or questions with the following procedures.
- Ask for someone from Computing Services to look at the computer (or look at
its specifications) and make a decision about whether or not it meets
the current minimum qualifications to remain on the campus network.
- In general, we expect that any new computer being added to the campus network under the faculty computer replacement policy means that an existing computer is being removed from the campus inventory. If a replaced computer will
be "bumped" to someone else in their department, then the computer being
replaced by this transfer should be the computer disposed. A copy of
a transfer as well as a disposal form should be included with the
purchase proposal form sent to Computing Services.
- If Computing Services approves a computer to sell for campus use, we will list it on the Computing Services "UMM Used Equipment Sales" page for campus sale for a period of time. If it is still unsold at the end of this period, the listing may be changed to list it for personal sale. Sales tax must be added to the price for a personal sale. Sales are always on a first come, first purchased basis.
- If not approved for campus sale, Computing Services will list the equipment for personal sale right away.
A disposal form must be completed and submitted to Joyce Amborn.
- Selling department sets the fair market value price in consultation with Computing Services, provides the text for the web page, and provides the contact person. Computing Services will post the information that the department provides. The revenue from the sale goes to the department that paid for the equipment; consult with the Grants Development office regarding equipment purchased as part of a sponsored project.
