To Stop Saving Sent Messages

    All sent mail, by default, is saved in a folder called sent-mail. To stop saving this copy of your sent messages complete the following steps:
    1. Get to the main menu of pine by typing pine at the cda.morris.umn.edu> prompt
    2. Type S to get into SETUP
    3. Then type C to edit the configuration settings
    4. Half-way down the page, you will see a setting called default-fcc
      The value will probably be set to <No Value Set: using "sent-mail">
    5. Scroll down to it using the arrow keys and press return when it is highlighted
    6. At the bottom of the screen the prompt will read Enter the replacement text :
    7. Press return again to indicate no value and verify that the new value is set to <Empty Value>
    8. Then press E to Exit Setup, and Y to save the new setting

General Folder Help

    When you first enter pine, typing L or highlighting FOLDER LIST will allow you to view all of your mail and news folders.

    If you are not subscribed to any newsgroups you will be able to view your mail folders without any additional steps. If you are subscribed to newsgroups you may need to select mail/ first to view the folders in your mail directory.

    Once you are viewing your mail folders, you can add (A), delete (D), or rename (R) folders.

    The INBOX folder contains your incoming mail that hasn't been saved to a folder in your mail directory yet.

    To save a message from any folder into another folder, highlight the message and type S. You will then get a prompt that asks where you would like to save that message. If you press return your message will be saved in the default saved-messages folder. You can press ^T (control T) to view the list of your current folders and select the one you want to save the message in. Or you can type in a new folder name and press return. You will then be prompted that the folder doesn't exist, press Y to create it.

Finding a Message

    To find a message while in the message index, type ^W (control W) and then enter the name or subject you are trying to find.

    By typing ^W while in the message text, you can find words and phrases in the message text.

Exporting Messages and Attachments

    While viewing the message text, press E to export a copy of the message to a file in your home directory. You will then need to give it a name a press return.

    To view an attachment in an email message press > then press S to save the file in your home directory. You can edit the file name or just press return.

    To view text files in your home directory you can use the pico editor (type pico filename).

    To view or execute non-text files, you may need to copy the file to a floppy disk and open it with the appropriate Windows or Macintosh program. You can copy the file to a floppy disk by using WS_FTP on Windows or Fetch on a Macintosh

dead.letter

    dead.letter files appear in your home directory when you cancel a message that you are composing.

    To stop writing these dead.letter files in your home directory do the following:

    1. Enter pine
    2. Type S to get into SETUP
    3. Then type C to edit the configuration settings
    4. Scroll down the feature name list to quell-dead-letter-on-cancel
    5. When this option is highlighted, press X, this will set the option
    6. Now press E to Exit and Y to save the changes

Printing a message from within Pine

    How to set up pine to enable printing of e-mail messages:
    1. Enter pine
    2. Type S to get into SETUP
    3. Then type P to edit the printer configuration settings
    4. Scroll down to the last option Personally selected print command
    5. Press A to Add Printer
    6. Type in the printer name and press return. For example,if you are adding the laser printer in Behmler, you may label your printer Laser or some other descriptive name.
    7. Now enter the command for the printer which is lpr -Pprinter_name

    9. Press E to Exit Setup
    10. Press Y to save your changes

    To print a message with your new printer:

    1. Highlight the message in the message index or view the email message text
    2. Press %, which is the print command
    3. Then press Y to print. If you have more than one printer set up press ^N (control N) to select the next printer and then press Y to print when the correct printer is listed
