Thunderbird Email Guide: Set Up: IMAP

1. Whether or not you've run Thunderbird before,
   if you have not yet set up an email account in Thunderbird,
   the "Account Wizard" will pop up.
   
   Note for Mac Users:
   You may need to click "Create a new account" to have this wizard start.
   
   
   
   
   
   Click Next.
   
   • If you've accidently closed the wizard,
     you can restart the wizard by going to
     [File] -> [New] -> [Account...]
   
   
   
   


2. The first screen of the wizard is Identity:
   
   
   • In the first box type your name.
     
     In the second box, type in your Morris email address.
     
     
     
     • Click NEXT.


3. In the next window, you type in where your email is coming from.
   
   
   • Select IMAP as "the type of incoming server you are using."
   
   
   
   • In [Incoming Server] type your Morris Internet ID followed
     by: ".email.umn.edu"
     
     
   • In [Outgoing Server] type: smtp.morris.umn.edu
   
   
   
   
   
   • Click NEXT.


4. In the next window, type your Morris Internet ID as the incoming and outgoing usernames.
   
   
   
   
   
   • Click NEXT.


5. Now you give account you just set up in Thunderbird a name.
   
   
   • The account name entered can be completely arbitrary as it will have no affect on the function of your email.
   
   
   
   
   • Click NEXT.


6. The next window asks you if the information you typed in is correct.
   
   
   • Look especially for typos.
   
   
   
   • Uncheck Download messages now.
   
   
   
   • If anything is wrong, click Back to fix errors, otherwise:
   • Click FINISH


7. Go to the top menu bar and select [Tools] -> [Account Settings...].
   
   
   


8. In the left menu, select [Server Settings].
   
   
   • Check the first box. It is called Use secure connection (SSL).
   
   
   The [Port] in the top right should change AUTOMATICALLY to 993.
   
   
   • Set [When I delete a message] to: Mark it as deleted.
   
   
   
   • Check [Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit] to be able to delete the marked messages when you close Thunderbird.


9. Click [Advanced...]
   
   
   • In the top box that says: [IMAP server directory] type:
     
   ~/mail/
   
   
   
   
   
   • Click OK


10. Go back to the left menu. Select [Outgoing Server (SMTP)].
    
    
    • At the bottom, under Use secure connection:, select TLS.
    
    
    
    • Back at the top, type 587 for [Port:].
    
    
    
    


11. Click [OK].
    
    
    • You may now check and send messages.
