Campus Student Mailing Lists
UMM Computing Services has created and maintains a mailing list of all
currently enrolled UMM students:
"ummofficial@lists.umn.edu".
The "ummofficial" list may only be used to fulfill urgent,
critical needs
of the UMM Registrar, Business, and Financial Aid offices.
It will also be made available for UMM administrative
functions that similarly have a need to reach students with urgent
information that is of interest to all recipients. The list is
moderated, and messages that do not comply with the rules given below
will be rejected. If you believe your message may
fit this category, continue reading the following criteria. If
your message does not fit this category but you wish to reach a
large number of students, scroll down to the 'Other Options'
section.
Because of the size of the list and the potential
impact on the UMM mail server and UMM students' e-mail accounts, it is
extremely important that this list not be used casually when other
means exist to communicate with UMM students. Many students do not
have the opportunity to regularly check their e-mail accounts, and an
unchecked flood of messages has the potential to exceed users' disk
quotas and cause their accounts to stop working. Students do
not have the
option to unsubscribe from the "ummofficial" list.
The following guidelines are in effect for this list:
- The subject of the message must apply to all currently enrolled students.
- The subject of the message must be UMM business. The message must contain information that every UMM student needs to know.
- Solicitations for volunteers, requests for comments, survey requests, announcements, reminders, forwarded messages, and the like are not
permitted.
- Messages must not be longer than 20 lines. For messages that require more
information, post a page to the UMM Web site and send a message
pointing students to that page.
- The requester must have a critical business need with an urgent deadline.
- Absolutely no invitations to events on or off campus. Event announcements
may be sent to Rebecca Webb
(webbrl@morris.umn.edu), who compiles an online calendar and sends
weekly messages about upcoming events for students.
- Absolutely no advertising.
- The lists are moderated, and the list moderator has the authority to
implement and interpret these usage guidelines. No sender has the
guaranteed right to post messages to either list.
Examples of appropriate types of messages for these lists:
- Announcements that queue times are out on the web and point to them.
- Announcements that grades are now available and pointing students to them.
- Announcements that tuition and fees are due and that late fees are pending.
This will be especially useful with this year of inconsistent deadlines
and very little notice.
To submit a message for approval to the "ummofficial" list
address your message to:
ummofficial@lists.umn.edu
Your message will be considered by the moderator and then sent to the list
if it meets these guidelines.
Other Options
ummsoln@lists.umn.edu
If your message subject does not meet the guidelines to be sent to the
"ummofficial" list, but you want to reach a large
number of UMM's current students, consider using the Student
Organization Leaders' Network mailing list,
ummsoln@lists.umn.edu, which currently includes
over 300 of UMM's most active student leaders.
ummstudents@lists.umn.edu
Another option is "ummstudents@lists.umn.edu" which goes to most UMM
students. It is for messages that may be of interest to the entire
student body but do not meet the "ummofficial"
criteria. The entire enrolled student body is placed on this list
at the beginning of each semester. Students may then opt out of the
list if they choose.
EVENTS e-mail
Remember that all items submitted for inclusion in the on-line calendar are included in
a weekly e-mail that IS sent to "ummofficial," as is the Weekly Bulletin
compiled and mailed by Judy Riley.
