Fetch

Fetch is a Macintosh program for transferring files such as HTML, gif or jpeg, using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). It allows you to transfer files with any connected machine that supports FTP, including the cda and www server on campus. It can be found on the macserver in the Communications folder.

Connecting to another machine

When you start Fetch or choose the New Connection... menu item, you will be prompted to enter the following:
Host The host name of the server you want to transfer files to or from ie cda.morris.umn.edu or www.morris.umn.edu.
User ID The user name of your account on that server
Password the password for that account
Directory the starting directory on the host server (optional)
For example, if you want to transfer files to or from your cda or www account, you would type:
cda.morris.umn.edu on the host line
Your cda account username on the User Id line
Your cda account password on the Password line

Changing Directories:

To select another directory on the host server, double-click on the directory name in the file list (there will be a folder next to the name of each directory). Clicking on the pop-up menu above the file lists will let you move to any ancestor of the current directory.

Getting a File from the host server:

You can transfer files from the server to the Macintosh that you are using (or to a disk), by doing the following:
  1. Select a transfer option (Automatic, Text, or Binary). If you aren't sure what kind of file it is, choose the Automatic setting (Fetch will determine the file type).
  2. Select the file from the file list and click the Get File... button.
Note: To get more than one file at a time, click on the files in the file list while holding down the Command (open apple) key, and click the Get Files... button.

Putting a File on to the server:

Put a file from your Macintosh (or a disk) onto the host server by doing the following:
  1. Click on the Put File... button.
  2. Double click on the name of the file that you want to put.
  3. Enter a new name for the file to be saved as on the host server if you want to change the name.
  4. Choose the format of the file or allow format to remain as automatic:
    • MacBinary II - to just store the file on the host server
    • BinHex - to convert the file so that it can be e-mailed
    • Text - to create a text file using rules of host's system
    • Wrapped Text - create a text file with line lengths limited
    • Raw Data - will not perform any conversions at all
  5. Last, click OK.
Note: To upload more than one file at a time, hold down the Option key while clicking the Put File... button. Next, double-click the name of each file that you want to upload. Click Done.

Canceling a file transfer:

You can cancel an on-going operation by selecting the Stop button.

Once the pages have been uploaded you should view the pages in a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. Enter the URL in the browser's "location" field and that all links, graphics and photos display. If something doesn't display, review the HTML coding for errors.
