Using Lynx
Lynx is a text-based browser for the World-Wide Web. It is an alternative
way to use WWW sites when it is not convenient to use a graphical browser
such as Netscape. At UMM, lynx is available on both cda (Unix) and caa
(Vax). Both run identically. To use lynx, telnet to your cda or caa
account, log in, and type "lynx" at the main prompt. You can use any
computer with a network connection to run lynx.
Both cda and caa are set to start lynx at the UMM Web site home page.
Thus, information about UMM appears on the main screen. In lynx, links to
other sites or documents appear in blue. You will see that there are
direct links to a number of topics, as well as the other U of M campuses,
on the UMM home page.
Use the up and down arrow keys (or the Tab key) to move between the
available links on a page. Use the right arrow key (or the Enter/Return
key) to follow a link to another Web site. Use the left arrow key to go
back to the previous site.
The space bar takes you to the next screen when the current page is more than one screen long.
Lynx provides two lines of command options at the bottom of every screen. The available command
options may change based on what you're doing at the moment.
"H" or "?" are the commands for help. Press either of these at any time to go to the very detailed
Lynx User Guide, which is a Web site from the developers of lynx.
"P" is the command to go to the Print menu. The print menu's options are:
Save to a local file; Mail the file; Print to the screen; or Computing Services printer.
Use the arrow keys to move between the options, and Enter/Return to pick an option.
"G" is the key for the Go menu. This allows you to access any Web page by
its address. When you press G, you will be prompted: "URL to open:" Type
in the URL, or Web address, of the page you want. URLs usually begin with
the letters "http."
"M" takes you back to the Main screen, i.e. the UMM home page, from
wherever you are. This is the same as the "home" button in Netscape.
The "/" key allows you to search for text on a page. Press / and you will
be prompted: "Enter a whereis query:" Type in the search string you'd
like to find on the current page, and lynx will jump to that text if it
appears on the page.
"O" is the command for the Options menu. Use this menu to change your default lynx settings.
If you follow a "mailto:" link in lynx, which is a link that is designed
to allow you to send mail to a specified individual, you will be taken
through a series of mail prompts to compose your message. The
"webmaster@www.morris.umn.edu" link at the bottom of the UMM home page is an
example of a "mailto:" link. Please feel free to use this link to ask
questions while you are using lynx.
To quit lynx, type "q" at any time. This command works from all lynx menus.
