Guidelines for the Use of UMM Email Lists

Updated July 2003

UMM Computing Services maintains numerous email lists for the convenience of UMM's students, faculty, and staff. Three of these lists are discussed in these guidelines:

  • ummstaff@lists.umn.edu -- UMM faculty and staff opt-out list for commercial messages
  • ummusa@lists.umn.edu -- UMM United Staff Association members
  • ummfacpa@lists.umn.edu -- UMM faculty and P&A staff

These lists are intended to handle communications to UMM employees that are urgent, important, or of very broad general interest.

The "ummstaff" list is an opt-out list which may be used for commercial purposes such as announcements of sales, rentals, and for other topics not directly related to campus business.

The "ummusa" and "ummfacpa" lists are inclusive; members of these two UMM employment categories are not permitted to unsubscribe from them. For this reason, these lists should be used for UMM business only. Messages that are not of interest to all or most members of the list should not be sent to the list.

UMM Computing Services is mandated by the UMM Computing Ethics Policy as the organization that should publish guidelines and procedures for the use of UMM's technology resources. Therefore, we strongly urge users to respect the following published guidelines in their use of UMM's email lists.

  1. Attachments cannot be correctly received by many UMM email users. In addition, they are potential carriers of computer viruses. Do not send file attachments to any UMM lists. Instead, copy and paste the text of your file into the message body.
  2. UMM's technology resources may not be used for commercial purposes. This restriction applies to UMM's email lists as well. Messages involving sales or solicitations must be restricted to the "ummstaff" list only.
  3. The "ummusa" and "ummfacpa" lists should be used for UMM's business. They are not intended for use as an interest group or discussion board. Individuals, committees, or organizations that want to originate or participate in an issues discussion are encouraged to create new lists for these purposes. Contact UMM Computing Services (Mark Van Overbeke or Lynn Schulz) for help in setting up a new list.
  4. Do not forward messages from others to UMM email lists.
  5. 5. No abusive language is tolerated on any of UMM's email lists.
  6. To be removed from the "ummstaff" list, send mail to:
    listserv@lists.umn.edu
    containing the message:
    unsubscribe ummstaff

The mailing lists of all students are more restricted and have different requirements.
