There are some basic steps to follow to get connected to ResNet:
  1. Finding your Adaptor addresses
  2. Registering your computer with Computing Services.
  3. Getting the computer up and running on the network.

Step 1: Finding your network adapter addresses

Ethernet Addresses

Ethernet Address Instructions

Windows Vista

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Type cmd where it says Start Search in the lower left and press Enter
  3. Type getmac /v in the black window that appears.
  4. Look for Local Area Conn, then Physical Address in the text that is returned.

Windows XP

  1. Select Start -> Programs ->Accessories ->Command Prompt
  2. The Command Prompt dialog box will appear
  3. Type ipconfig /all at the prompt
  4. Your network settings will be displayed
  5. Scroll to the section that says "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection"
  6. Your computer's network adapter address is given as "Physical Address." This will be a combination of letters and numbers, twelve characters total.
  7. The physical address is what you'll need to write on your connection request form.

Macintosh OS X

  1. Click on Apple Menu - System Preferences
  2. Click on the Network icon. Configure should be set to Built-in Ethernet.
  3. Under the TCP/IP tab, Configure should be set to Using DHCP.
  4. The Hardware Address should be visible at the bottom of the screen. If you do not find it there, click the Ethernet tab. In this window its called the Ethernet ID. Submit this address to me on your Connection Request form; your Internet connectivity will not function until I get it entered into a table.
  5. Connect your computer to the wall port labeled B, D, F, or H. If you do not have Ethernet cable, we have cables for you to borrow.

Step 2: Registering your computer with Computing Services.

Your computer must be registered with Computing Services so that we can activate a network port in your room and assign an Internet address to your machine. You can do this by filling out and submitting a ResNet connection request form, which can be obtained at the Computing Services office (Behmler 10) or by filling out the online Connection Request Form. On the Connection Request Form you will need to enter the Ethernet adapter address from your computer. Links to the instructions for finding this address are on the form.

Step 3: Getting the computer up and running on the network.

Once the ethernet adapter address has been submitted, you will be on the Internet in approximately a day during the first week of the Fall semester and in a few hours the rest of the semester.
