Updating Spybot & Symantec Anti-Virus and Running Scans in Safe Mode

• Symantec Anti-Virus Scan in Safe Mode

1. Start by opening Spybot
   
2. Click the "Search for Updates" button (under the Recovery button)
   
   
3. Spybot will automatically search for all available updates; The available updates (if any) will appear in a table near the bottom of the window
   
   
   
4. Click all the check boxes and click "Download Updates" to download the updates
5. Once the "Update Progress" Window has completed and closed, Spybot should now be up-to-date

Updating Symantec Anti-Virus

1. Open Symantec Anti-Virus and Click the "LiveUpdate" button (located above the Exit button)
   
   
2. Click the "Next" button to search and download updates
   
   
3. Symantec will automatically download and install all available updates
   
   
4. Symantec Anti-Virus is now up-to-date

You should now run your scans. Please refer to Spybot Search and Destroy Page for more information on Spybot.

To run a Spybot scan, do the following:

1. Open Spybot and click on "Check for problems" Spybot will start scanning your computer, this will take some time
   
   
   
   
2. Once your scan completes, you will get a list of all the problems found by Spybot
   
   
3. Make sure all the problems are selected and click the "Fix selected problems" button
   
   
4. You will get a confirmation window, click "Yes"
   
   
5. You have succesfully scanned your computer with Spybot

To run a Anti-Virus scan, do the following:

1. Open Symantec Anti-Virus
2. Click on "Scan Computer" located on the left side of the window; this will bring you to the Scan Computer screen
   
   
3. If you are running Version 9.0, you may be able to scan for expanded threats, such as spyware and adaware. Click the Options button and check the box that says "Scan for expanded threats" and the box that says "Scan for in-memory threats"
4. Click the Save Settings button, and then click the OK button. Next time you run a scan, the same settings will be used.
   
   
5. Select which devices you want to scan and click the scan button. Selecting the "Local Disk (C:)" will scan your computer
6. Your computer will start the scanning process, this will take awhile
   
   
7. After the scan completes, if any viruses have been found, you will get a window that tells you the action SAV took for each virus threat
   
   
8. Click on the over arrow to cycle through explanations of each virus and the action taken
   
   

After you complete both scans, restart your computers noramally. It should be free of Spyware and Viruses.
