Ad-aware

Ad-aware SE, made by Lavasoft Sweden, is used to identify and eliminate tracking software and other spyware. It is free for use on personally owned computers only. It is not licensed for use on computers that are owned by the University of Minnesota.
  1. Download Ad-aware SE Personal from the campus distribution server (http://www.lavasoft.com).
  2. Use the Save As dialog box to save the file to your desktop.
  3. After the download is complete, click Open.
  4. The "Ad-aware 6 Personal" window will then open.
  5. Important! Make sure you have closed all other programs and windows before clicking Next.
  6. After reading the License Agreement, click Next.
  7. Use the "Destination Location" window to choose where the program will be installed. Click Next.
  8. To start the installation, click Next.
  9. After the installation process is complete Click Finish.
  10. You have successfully installed Ad-aware 6.

Using Ad-aware

  1. Double Click on the Adware icon on your desktop.
  2. Important! Check for updates before running an Adware scan. To check for updates, click on the link "check for updates now"
  3. A "Performing Webupdate" window will open. Click Connect. (You must have an active internet connection.)
  4. If there are any updates available, a window will open asking if you want to download the file. Click OK.
  5. After the update is complete a window will open, Click Finish. This will update Ad-aware and return you to the "Ad-aware 6.0 Personal" window.
  6. If no updates are available, a window will appear with the text "No Updated Components Available." Click OK. A new window will appear, click Finish.

  7. Now you can use Ad-aware to scan your system for spyware and tracking cookies that may have been installed without your knowledge. To run an Ad-aware scan Click Start.
  8. Select "Perform Smart System Scan" as your scan mode.Click Next.

Understanding The Summary

After scanning is complete, a "Scan Complete" window will appear containing some important information:
  • "Objects recognized" is the total number of spyware items detected on your computer.
  • "New objects" is the number of new spyware items detected when you did the scan.
  • "Processes identified" is the number of active spyware processes running.
  • "Registry keys" is the number of Windows registry keys found that were created by spyware.
  • "Registry values identified" is the number of registry values created by spyware.
  • "Files identified" are any new files associated with spyware.
  • "Folders identified" are new folders associated with spyware.
  1. Click Next.
  2. A Scanning Results window will appear giving an itemized list of the results from the scan.
  1. Right click anywhere within the "Object Column." Choose "Select all Objects". This marks all of the identified objects to be removed.
  2. Click Next. This will remove all the identified spyware objects on your computer.
  3. The starting "Ad-aware 6.0 Personal" window will appear. Close out the window and you're done.
