Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot Search & Destroy is a free program written by Patrick Kolla to identify and eliminate spyware and other threats that may have been installed on a computer without the user's knowledge or permission. It is available for Windows only. Be aware that some competing inferior programs have similar names; watch for "kolla.de" or "safer-networking.org" in web site addresses to be certain you are using the authentic Spybot site.

Spybot Search & Destroy may be used free on any personal computer or on any computer owned by the University. Donations, used to maintain and update the program, are welcomed.

1. Use the "Save As" dialog box to save the installation file to your desktop. Wait for the download to complete.
2. Double-click on the downloaded installation icon on your desktop.
3. The "Welcome to the Spybot- Search and Destroy Setup Wizard" window will appear. Click 'Next'.
4. After Reading the License Agreement, click on "I accept the Agreement", then click 'Next'.
5. The next screen allows you to choose where Spybot S&D will be installed on your computer. Click 'Next' to Continue.
6. On the "Select Components" You won't need to select any tabs unless you desire to, but make sure that the "Main files" box is checked (it should also be a shade of gray), before you click on 'Next'.

7. The next prompt will ask you if You wish to create a 'Start Menu' Folder (under Programs) for Spybot. Click 'Next' to do so.
8. If you wish to create a "Quick Launch" icon for SPYBOT (located in the lower left hand corner of your screen), or if you wish to create a desktop icon for spybot make sure the proper boxes are checked and click'Next'.
9. A "Ready to Install" Box should appear Showing you all of the settings you chose in the previous steps. Click "Install".
10. If you selected the "Download Updates Immediately" box, you will be asked where to install the updates. Click Install and then close.

11. You will need to click Finish when you are done installing the program. When Spybot is finished installing, you can start using the program.

1. Double-click on the Spybot Search and Destroy icon on your desktop.
2. Click on the icon from the list of icons on the left.
3. Click on the "Search for Updates" icon at the top of the screen. After searching, checkboxes should appear showing available updates:

4. Once updates have been found, a list will appear on the screen. Select the updates you wish to install by clicking on the checkboxes (a green checkbox will appear on the updates you select), click on the "Download Updates" icon to download them. (The process might take a couple of minutes)
5. After all of the updates have been downloaded, click on this button on the left side of the screen to return to the main Spybot screen:

1. Click on the "Check for Problems" icon to scan your computer for spyware and other threats. The scan will take several minutes.
2. Once the search is done, a list of all threats will be posted on the lower screeen:

3. Click on the "Fix Selected Problems" button on the lower-middle portion of the screen. A prompt asking you if you wish to remove the selected files will come up. Click OK.

The Immunize feature is a tool that can help "immunize" your computer against spyware. This feature comes with two different types of immunities:

• Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity
This feature allows you to tweak some Internet Explorer settings to block any spyware or threats that may be installed when you visit a web site.
• Permanently Running Bad Download Blocker for Internet Explorer
This is a browser helper that functions with Internet Explorer. This feature will prevent all files that are known as malicious.

1. Click on the Immunize icon on the left-hand side of the program. Once you click on it the Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity feature should run automatically.

2. A prompt telling you how many problems were blocked, how many more problems are possible and then asking you to immunize. Click Ok.
3. Click the Immunize button (the green plus sign).
4. A prompt will show you how many bad products have been blocked.
5. To finish, click ok.

1. Be sure that you are in the "Immunize" feature of the Spybot Search and Destroy program.
2. Scroll down the pane until you reach the "Permanently Running Bad Download Blocker For Internet Explorer" portion of the Immunize feature.

3. You must first install the feature by checking the check box.
You can set this feature to do three things:
• Block all bad pages silently- By selecting this feature, Spybot will automatically block all bad products(spyware) without notifying you, while the web page downloads normally.
• Display dialog when blocking- This will notify you, via prompt, every time a bad product has been blocked when you visit a web site.
• Ask for blocking confirmation- This feature will bring up a prompt asking you if you wish to block any spyware whenever you visit a site. Using your own discretion, this feature will allow you do decide which forms of spyware are acceptable or unacceptable.
4. If you use the Opera Browser, you can also block Plugins by checking the appropriate profile box under the Permanent Opera Immunity section.

Be sure to use Spybot S&D often, and to run updates each time in order to have the latest and best protection the program offers.
