Holten Puts Starbuck Online

University of Minnesota, Morris student and Starbuck native Cory Holten ’15 is working with his hometown Chamber of Commerce to create an online directory of local businesses and events. The aim of the project is to create a website for visitors and residents who wish to find information pertaining to events and stores in town. Holten’s job is to collect this information and publish it on the site.
The website utilizes drop-down menus for different subjects and audiences. Future possibilities for content include space for business advertisements and promotions, web pages for volunteer organizations, and the sale of Starbuck merchandise. The Chamber’s goal is to allow local ownership and development of the site.
“I know a lot of the members of the Chamber, and I’ve known them for a while,” says Holten, who is glad to be working for his hometown. “They all share a common goal that will ultimately end up benefiting Starbuck.”

The University of Minnesota, Morris Center for Small Towns (CST) is a community outreach program that serves as a point-of-entry to the resources of the University of Minnesota. Small towns, local units of government, k-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, and other University units are able to utilize CST’s resources as they work on rural issues or make contributions to rural society. Their mission is to focus the University’s attention and marshal its resources toward assisting Minnesota’s small towns with locally identified issues by creating applied learning opportunities for faculty and students.
