A sudden thunderstorm? No, it's rare occurrence -- tremor for '93 graduation
"I don't know how I can say anything after that."
The Morris Area High commencement of '93 will always be remembered for a special reason. In addition to the standard reasons for cherishing memories of this evening, there was a highly novel one.
The quote opening this article relates to this. It was spoken by Jeremy Lopez. Lopez was one of two student speakers to address the typically large audience.
The quote came midway through the Lopez speech. The speech had been interrupted.
Was this a sudden thunderstorm? Or, as a Morris resident recalled speculating (in comments to the Twin Cities media), a "cold air funnel going over?"
No.
Lopez had just made a statement about "the task of becoming responsible citizens." The task is related to understanding the world's diverse peoples, he asserted.
In the Sun-Tribune notebook where notes on this speech were compiled, the next line down contains one word. It was underlined. The word: "earthquake."
The notes then resume with the Lopez quote that began this article.
Yes, a tremor caused noise, shaking and novel memories for the parents/friends associated with the MAHS '93 graduates.
