Where were you when the earth moved?!
UMM staff member, Pam Gades, computing services, wonders where folks were during the 1975 and 1993 earthquakes in Stevens County. Not just a hobby for Gades, she's researching the topic as part of her Master's of Liberal Studies degree.
The 1975 quake struck about mid-morning on a warm summer day, July 9, 1975. The quake measured 4.6 to 4.8 on the Richter scale and is known as the Morris quake, but had its epicenter near Dumont in Traverse County. It struck around 8:25 p.m. on June 4, 1993, and certainly was noticed.
Gades has partnered with geology assistant professor, Peter Whelan, in the project. Gades hopes that their findings, combined with an internet web site, will be a useful educational tool for elementary school teachers and their students.
