UMM Spring Break 2006!
Get on the bus!
It's Spring Break at UMM, and that means travel, adventure and service. Join the
"Students
Today,
Leaders Forever" club members and their bus driver, safely returned from
their hurricane
clean-up trip to Mississippi, for a photographic tour of
Spring Break 2006!

We begin our tour at the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, a useful spot for synchronizing watches before heading off to explore, as Kay Dee
Maddy, Sarah Gannon, and Ange Schmidt did on a trip through England
and Ireland. |

Here we see several members of the United Latinos taking a break from a conference in Chicago. Note how
the attractive plumage of sophomore Simón Franco, from Maracay, Venezuela, places him at the
center of activity. Surrounding him are sophomores Stacy Pankratz of Springfield, Viri Zuniga of
Mexico, Kate Oliver of Minneapolis, and Maria Hanson of Ely. |

|

|
Native to the prairies of western Minnesota, the UMM Concert Choir members migrate each spring. Here we see them posing by the Golden Gate Bridge on their
tour of the west coast.
On your right you'll spot members of the Lutheran Campus Ministry in Sidwell, Louisiana, taking a break from
Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Junior Susan Seim of Maple Grove submitted this
photograph documenting the strength and good nature common to the UMM species of volunteer.
|

UMMers acclimate well to foreign environments. Here we see Stillwater sophomore Rachael Gilman embracing
her inner sea lion while keeping one knee firmly planted on her UMM scarf to prevent it blowing away...
|

... while Patrick Van Zandt, a junior from St. Paul, sheds the necessary layers to survive the high heat
and humidity of Bangkok, Thailand.
|

Communication can be challenging for any traveler. These seniors in their UMM hoodies (Lindsey Armstrong
of Pequot Lakes, Chelsea Anttila of St. Anthony Village, and Becky Houdek of Deer River) seem to be trying
to spell out a message while hiking on Mt. Tamalpais overlooking San Francisco.

New Ulm freshman Briana Czer demonstrates the legend of Princess Ewauna at the 'Face Rock' formation on the
Oregon coast. Princess Ewauna, captured by the evil Seatka after swimming into the sea, gazed up at the
moon to avoid looking into her captor's eyes.
|

Would you let these Cougars build your house? 15 members of the UMM Habitat for Humanity club journeyed to
Taos, New Mexico to spend four days working on an adobe home for a single mother and her four children.
|

|

|
|
The question has been with us as long as Spring Break itself: the beach or the slopes?
St. Paul junior Patrick Van Zandt bounced back nicely after being stung by a jellyfish while visiting a beachside hostel in Hua-Hin, Thailand with friends he made in
Bangkok during a rural ELTAP placement last year. Hastings junior Teresa McAlpin decided to brave the slopes of Berthoud Pass while visiting Colorado Springs
junior Steph Clark over break.
|

Note the glassy wet sand beneath Briana Czer's feet. This indicates that the New Ulm freshman better beat it back to dry land before those waves crashing around the
monoliths race to shore and soak her from hoodie to toe. As for the photo at right, we don't even want to know where New Brighton senior Dan Schlatter was standing when
he caught St. Louis Park freshmen Donnie Hicks "out on a ledge for the Spring Break Photo Contest" while hiking with the Geology Club in Guadalupe Mountains National
Park, Texas.
|

Don't look down!
Oh, and don't click if you have a weak heart. |

Sophomore Brady Alsaker (Benson), freshman Elise McDermott (Roseville), and sophomore Rachael Gilman (Stillwater) discovered a startling driftwood formation on the beach
at the Inn at Otter Crest on the Oregon Coast.
|

Speaking of wooden structures, do you recognize the white picket fence
behind Glencoe sophomore Amanda Murphy? No? The locals of Hannibal,
Missouri might let you whitewash it for
the price of an apple, some marbles, or a spoon cannon...
|

|
|
Note the dazzling smiles, typical of Cougars whatever the location. Counter-clockwise from upper left: Maplewood junior Sara
Jamieson visits recent graduate Kim
Weaver in Oceanside, California; Glencoe sophomore Amanda Murphy smiles from St. Louis, perhaps because UMM tuition is the
same for in- or out-of-state residents (her family recently moved to Missouri); students studying "Italian Renaissance and
Baroque Art - In Context" visit the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

The Lutheran Campus Ministry students pose in the hazmat suits they were required to wear while cleaning up after Katrina. |
Out of Competition

Next up we have an item of historical interest - our first UMMRA entry! George Fosgate, professor
emeritus of theatre and proud member of the UMM Retirees Association, hosted two members of the UMM
Concert Choir during their tour stop in Beaverton, Oregon.
|

And here's junior Garrett Lee, who hopes we all had a glorious Spring Break while he's studying so
hard in New Zealand he barely has time to go hiking in his UMM Tinman Triathlon t-shirt.
|
Thanks for joining our tour of UMM Spring Break 2006 photos! We hope you enjoyed yourself as much as our students
apparently did! Congratulations to all our winners and thanks to the leadership from Student Affairs, Enrollment, and the Dean's
Office for their
continued support of the Break Photo Contests.
