Commencement 2001

May 11, 2001
The Thirty-eighth UMM Commencement Ceremonies

The campus enjoyed wonderful weather for the first Commencement to process from New Science. Visiting dignitaries included the Honorable Regent Jessica Phillips and Curtis Loschy, President of the UMM Alumni Association. Retiring Professor James Olson told our story, Senator Wellstone praised student outreach, and Student Speaker Keia Johnson, winner of the Curtis Larson Award, assured us, "I'll never forget you...MM."

Staff work all week to prepare the campus for the big day. Students pay a last visit to faculty and staff.

Receptions and the Honors Recital fill the early afternoon.

Students sign in and prepare their note cards, probably not remembering that this will be the last time they are together under one roof.

Students line up above, faculty below...

...and the color guard practices while regalia is adjusted. Everything has to be perfect for the graduates' big day.

UMM's own, the Honorable Regent Jessica Phillips, visits with two of our division chairs
while Regent candidate Angie Bos poses with the Commencement speaker, Senator Paul Wellstone.

The choir entertains the crowd with a pre-ceremony selection and the concert band provides rhythm for the procession,
eventually breaking into the traditional Pomp and Circumstance.

The procession begins. Don't drop that card!

The students take the mall...

...and the dignitaries take the stage...

...and the lonely PE Center rain site sits deserted. Hurray!
