Commencement at the University of Minnesota, Morris was held on Saturday, May 15, 2010, on a perfect spring day under a glorious blue sky. Graduates, faculty, staff, family, and friends gathered on the mall to recognize the accomplishments of the graduates and to celebrate new beginnings.
After receptions for the graduates, the ceremony began with faculty forming an Honor Walk as graduates make their way to the mall.
The Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Martin H. Seggelke, assistant professor of music, and the Concert Choir, under the direction of Ken Hodgson, associate professor of music, performed a pre-commencement concert and musical selections during the ceremony. Adam Schmiesing ’10, Swanville, conducted “Music for a Festival”, and Anna K. Jessup ’10, Brooten, led the “Star Spangled Banner”.
Student Color guards Kristin Youngblom ’12, Lafayette, and Katie Barron ’11, St. Paul, led the processional. Mace Bearer was Michael Lackey, associate professor of English. Student Marshals were Dominic Scheck ’11, Brooklyn Park, and Julie Drennen ’12, Lino Lakes. Faculty Marshalwas Jennifer Rothchild, associate professor of sociology.
Chancellor Jacqueline R. Johnson gave the welcome and recognized special guests.
Commencement speakers were Bennett Smith ’10, Morris, chosen by fellow graduates to represent his class, and University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks. Regent Clyde Allen, chair of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents, represented the board and shared remarks.
Kathy Julik-Heine ’10, Taylor Falls, introduced President Bruininks.
During the yearlong 2010 Celebration, the University of Minnesota, Morris marks its 50th anniversary. The attendance of key University officials Bruininks and Allen acknowledged this historic moment, reaffirming the campus’s unique public liberal arts mission in the future of the University, the region, and the state.
In recognition of the campus’s origins as an American Indian boarding school, a Native American Honor Song was performed by the Northern Wind Singers to recognize and pay tribute to the achievements of Morris scholars. The Honor Song was dedicated to the Class of 2010. Alumnus Gabriel B. Desrosiers ’05 is lead singer and keeper of the drum for the Northern Wind Singers.
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean Cheryl K. Contant presented the Class of 2010 and Regent Allen conferred degrees. Jim Mahoney ’85, president of the University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association, welcomed the newest members of the alumni association.
