Academic, Competitive and other Scholarships for New First-Year and Transfer Students

Academic Scholarships

Automatic First-Year Academic Scholarships
Automatic First-Year Academic Scholarships are awarded based on high school class rank and other Admission's Office criteria. Home-schooled students and those attending high schools that do not have high school ranks are considered for these scholarships individually based on additional Admission's Office criteria. No application is required.

  • Chancellor's Scholarship: Students graduating in the top 5% of their high school class will receive $14,000 with this automatic $3,500/year scholarship. (95-99%)
  • Dean's Scholarship: Students graduating in the top 10% of their high school class will receive $10,000 with this automatic $2,500/year scholarship. (90-94%)
  • Associate's Scholarship: Students graduating in the top 20% of their high school class will receive $4,000 with this automatic $1,000/year scholarship. (80-89%)

These scholarships are renewable for four-years by maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5. Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

Note: Automatic First-Year Academic Scholarships may not be combined with the Prairie Scholars Award or the Morris Scholars Award.

Automatic Transfer Scholarship
Students transferring to the University of Minnesota , Morris (UMM) from an accredited institution with 30 transferable credits and a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) qualify for a $2,000 non-renewable scholarship; those with at least a 3.5 GPA qualify for a $1,000 non-renewable scholarship. The Transfer Academic Scholarship can be used during student's first 2 semesters at UMM. Only credits earned after high school graduation are considered. University of Minnesota transfer students, those re-admitted to UMM and students who have already earned a bachelor's degree are not eligible for this scholarship. No application is required.

Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

National Merit Scholarships

National Merit Scholarship Winners
National Merit Scholarship Winners who choose University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) as their first choice college will receive the full-tuition National Merit Scholarship.

This scholarship is renewable for four-years by maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5. Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

Note: Winners of the National Merit Scholarship are unable to receive the Prairie Scholar or Morris Scholar Award. The full-tuition National Merit Scholarship will replace the Prairie Scholar or Morris Scholar Award.

National Merit Semi-Finalists and Commended Scholars
National Merit Semi-Finalists or Commended Scholars will receive $4,000 with this automatic $1,000/year scholarship, renewable for four-years by maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5. This scholarship is given in addition to the Automatic First-Year Academic Scholarship. Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

Students must submit supporting documentation to the Admissions Office (National Merit Certificate or Letter).

Note: National Merit Semi-Finalist or Commended Scholars who receive the Prairie Scholar or Morris Scholar Award will have the Automatic First-Year Academic Scholarship and National Merit Semi-Finalist/Commended Scholar award replaced by the larger Prairie Scholar or Morris Scholar Award.

Competitive First-Year Scholarships

Students must submit a completed Application for Admission and the Supplement for the Competitive Scholarship Application by the December 15th deadline date (after December 15th the Supplement for the Competitive Scholarship Application will no longer be available on-line).

Prairie Scholars Award - Prairie Scholars will be selected during a competitive interview process. This award is based on a scholarship essay and an outstanding academic and leadership record. The Prairie Scholars Award is a full-tuition scholarship, renewable for four-years by maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5. Transfer students are not eligible.

Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

Morris Scholars Award - Morris Scholars will be selected during a competitive interview process. This award is based on a scholarship essay and an outstanding academic and leadership record. The Morris Scholars will receive $20,000 with this automatic $5,000/year award, renewable for four-years by maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, plus a one-time $2,500 scholarly stipend. The stipend may be used during the second, third or fourth year at UMM to engage in an eligible scholarly experience (e.g., to study abroad, to participate in a research or artistic project or for travel to academic conferences). Transfer Students are not eligible.

Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

Clyde Johnson Music Scholarship

Clyde E. Johnson Music Scholarships honor Clyde Johnson, professor emeritus of music, who served UMM from 1961 until 1999. The scholarships are awarded to talented University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) music majors to cover one free year of private lessons in the student's major performance area.

Students who plan to enter UMM as music majors and who have demonstrated high music ability and performance may be eligible for this scholarship. A separate application is necessary:  Clyde Johnson Music Scholarship Application.  Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of a CD or cassette audition and a statement describing his/her musical background and career goals.  The application deadline is April 1, 2009.  This scholarship is awarded by the Music Discipline.  


UMM's Donor-Funded Scholarship Application for New First-Year Students

Douglas and Marion Payne Rural Students Scholarship

This application will be available on January 1, 2009 for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Institutional Scholarships for New First-Year Students

Josephine L. Merriam Scholarship
Students must be entering UMM in the fall as new first-year student and must have applied for admission prior to consideration for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to first-year male students who demonstrate financial need as determined by Financial Aid Office criteria. Transfer students are not eligible. No application is required.

Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.

William W. Stout Scholarship
Students must be entering UMM in the fall as new first-year student and must have applied to admission prior to consideration for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to first-year female students who demonstrate financial need as determined by Financial Aid Office criteria. Transfer students are not eligible. No application is required.

Students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits.
