Verification

The United States Department of Education selects students for review in a process called “Verification”. The selection of the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applications is accomplished primarily through a series of edit checks that are designed to identify FAFSA applications with the greatest likelihood for error. Some selection is random. The University of Minnesota , Morris (UMM) is required to verify all applications that have been selected for verification, up to 30% of federal aid applicants.

In this process, UMM will be comparing information from the FAFSA application with signed copies of students/spouse/parent(s) Federal tax forms, W-2 forms, verification worksheet or other required financial documents. The student/parent(s) will be required to complete all the questions on the Verification Worksheet . Federal law states schools have the right to request certain information before awarding federal and state aid. If there are differences between the FAFSA application and requested information UMM will make the corrections electronically.

If the requested information is not submitted by the tenth week of the term, the student may lose financial aid eligibility.

If students need a copy or transcript of a tax return or a W-2 call the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1-800-829-1040 to request the information.

Other Verification

(Family Verification/Asset Verification/Income Verification/Verification of Net Worth Information)

UMM will request documentation to verify conflicting information or if a change was made to the student's processed FAFSA.

If the requested information is not submitted by the tenth week of the term, the student may lose financial aid eligibility.
