Verification

The University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) will verify all students selected by the Central Processing System (CPS) in a process called ‘Verification’.  The selection of the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applications is accomplished primarily through a series of edit checks that are established by federal regulations to identify FAFSA applications with the greatest likelihood for error. Some selection by the CPS is random. UMM is required to verify all applications the CPS selects for verification, up to 30% of federal aid applicants.

UMM will request that students/parent(s) submit signed copies of their federal tax forms, W-2 forms and completed verification worksheet to the Financial Aid Office. The student/parent(s) will be required to complete all the questions on the Verification Worksheet.

In this process, UMM will be comparing information from the FAFSA application with signed copies of students/spouse/parent(s) Federal tax forms, W-2 forms, verification worksheet or other required financial documents. The U.S. Department of Education federal law states schools have the right to request certain information before awarding federal, state and institutional aid. If there are differences between the FAFSA application and requested information, UMM will make the corrections to the students processed FAFSA electronically and submit the corrections to the CPS.

If the requested information is not submitted by the tenth week of the term, the student may lose financial aid eligibility.

If students need a copy or transcript of a federal tax return or a W-2 call the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1-800-829-1040 to request the information.

UMM’s Other Verification

In addition to ‘Verification’ UMM will request documentation to verify conflicting information or if the student or parent(s) have made corrections to the student’s processed FAFSA.

In this process, UMM may request students/parent(s) to complete certain forms such as:

  • Family Verification Form
  • Asset Verification Form
  • Income Verification Worksheet
  • Verification of Net Worth Information Form

Students/parent(s) will be required to complete the form and submit the requested documentation to the Financial Aid Office.

If the requested information is not submitted by the tenth week of the term, the student may lose financial aid eligibility.
