Internal UMM Opportunities
Educational Development Program (EDP) (Available to UMM faculty, faculty-student groups, and P&A staff.)
The UMM Educational Development Program (EDP) is designed to stimulate and support curricular development on the Morris campus by allocating small grants for specific projects
EDP funds are intended to support the developmental stages of curricular improvement activities. They are not intended for needs assessment, for support of the planning of a development activity, for augmentation of operating resources, for maintenance or routine improvement of the curriculum, or for the acquisition of educational materials independent of any development activity. Requests that include the acquisition of equipment must clearly justify that acquisition as essential to a curricular development project.
Grant awards are expected to range up to roughly $2,000. It is expected that salary will be the dominant budget item in EDP proposals. As a guideline, for a major development project by a single individual, a salary request of $2,000 (plus fringe benefits) will be considered. If multiple people propose a project together, the amount to be awarded per person will likely be smaller.
In the past, the Curriculum Committee has made multiple-applicant awards. Four copies of the completed grant proposal should be submitted to the Dean's office by the application deadline.
UMM Dean's Office Deadline: March 26, 2010
Faculty Research Enhancement Funds (FREF)
FREF funds help UMM faculty members increase their research related activities. The funds are an effort to help offset some of the challenges of isolation that can be associated with our rural location. They are specifically meant to support faculty scholarly activity.
These funds will be awarded in three categories: 1) New Research/Creative Activity; 2) Collaborative Activities and 3) Research/Scholarly Travel.
Category I will provide up to $1,500 to support the beginning phase of a new research/creative activity. Eligible expenses include supplies, minor equipment needs, and travel to carry out research.
Category II will provide up to $750 to pay for costs incurred traveling to meet with research collaborators or to bring them to Morris. (The fund will not cover conference registration costs.)
Category III will provide up to $250 to offset the cost of research/scholarly -related travel. The intent is to help cover the added travel cost associated with UMM’s geographic location. This fund will support travel to research conferences as well as travel to conduct research. (The fund will not cover conference registration costs.)
Deadlines announced through the Dean's Office September 11 (for travel in October, November, December, and January), January 22 (for travel in February, March, April, and May), May 3 (for travel in June, July, August, and September)
Faculty Sabbatical Furlough (Leaves)
The purpose of the sabbatical furlough is to encourage special studies, investigations, and research by faculty members and thereby to increase their scholarship and capacity of service to students and the University. For the period of the furlough, the University will pay the absentee one-half of his/her regular salary. Application for sabbatical furlough may be made by any member of the faculty who has served the University for six consecutive years, of which at least two years must have been at a rank not lower than that of Assistant Professor.
For more information, contact Darla Peterson in the Dean's Office at 589-6015.
Deadline: November 3, 2009 (anticipated)
Faculty Sabbatical Supplement Program
The Faculty Sabbatical Supplement Program provides supplemental funds to academic units to support sabbaticals and development leaves for recommended tenured faculty. A portion of this central fund is allocated to each college and campus based on its proportion of the University's tenured faculty. This program provides funds to supplement up to the lesser of 30% or $30,000 of the A- or B-base salary (not including fringe) for faculty who are recommended to receive this benefit. Salary supplement funds must be matched by 1/3 using college or campus resources.
Sabbatical supplements are awarded using criteria and procedures established by each college and coordinate campus. Faculty seeking this supplemental award should contact the dean, director, or chancellor of their academic unit.
UMM Dean's Office Deadline: November 3, 2009 (anticipated)
IPC International Enhancement Grant for Curriculum Development
The International Programs Committee (IPC) invites proposals from all faculty members for a grant to enhance the existing UMM curriculum by offering students the chance to continue their studies internationally. Individual and joint projects are welcome. Unfortunately, funds are quite limited. The IPC will award one grant of up to $2,500.
Deadline: April 2009 (anticipated)
IPC Small Grant to Internationalize Curriculum
The IPC invites proposals from all faculty members for a grant to internationalize the UMM curriculum. The purpose of this grant is to help faculty members develop new courses with an international content or add to existing courses an international component or perspective. The IPC awards multiple grants of up to $1,500.
The grant may be used to subsidize a variety of expenses tied to curricular development projects, including (but not limited to) faculty salaries, the acquisition of educational materials, and the cost of travel for the purposes of research or to attend pertinent international exhibits or conferences. Joint proposals, including interdisciplinary ones, are welcome.
Deadline: April 2009 (Anticipated)
Preparing Future Faculty Program (PFF)
The Preparing Future Faculty Program provides a teaching and learning forum in which participants engage with a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural mix of masters students, doctoral candidates, and post-doctoral fellows. Participants discuss learning theory and strategies, develop teaching skills, create classroom and job search materials, and work with faculty from a range of institutional types.
Deadline: Ongoing
Morris Academic Partners (MAP)
In recognition of the value of academic employment to the intellectual development of students and of the opportunities thus provided to assist faculty in their work, the University of Minnesota, Morris, will award non-renewable stipends of up to $2,400 per academic year to academically talented third-year students, naming them as Morris Academic Partners (MAPs).
We will also offer up to six MAPs that begin in the summer and continue through the student's junior academic year. The stipends offered for these MAPs will be $2,000 for summer and $1,200 for each of the following two semesters.
MAP students are to undertake assignments that enhance their intellectual competence and increase their interest in graduate or professional study. Projects that qualify for consideration should involve greater complexity than typical work-study assignments and should provide assistance to, rather than add to the workload of, a busy and productive faculty member.
UMM Dean's Office Deadline: March 3, 2010
Morris Student Administrative Fellows Program
In recognition of the value of academic employment to the intellectual development of students and of the opportunities thus provided to assist campus offices in their work, the University of Minnesota, Morris, will award non-renewable stipends of up to $2,400 per academic year to students who will serve as interns in offices and programs on campus.
We will award MSAFs for substantive, academically enriching, projects involving students in responsible managerial positions working with faculty and staff mentors. The stipends for the MSAF Program will be based upon the number of hours the unit expects the student to work each week, ranging from four hours a week ($600 per semester, $1,200 per academic year) up to 8 hours per week ($1,200 per semester or $2,400 per academic year).
MSAF students are to undertake assignments that enhance their intellectual competence, enrich their academic program, and increase their interest in graduate or professional study. Projects that qualify for consideration should involve greater complexity than typical work-study assignments and should provide assistance to, rather than add to the workload of, a busy and productive faculty member and administrative office.
UMM Dean’s Office Deadline: March 5, 2010(anticipated)
Out-of-State Travel Subsidies (full-time faculty may apply)
UMM provides financial assistance to faculty members attending international, national or regional professional meetings beyond the borders of the state of Minnesota in the belief that such travel is an important aspect of faculty development. Applications must be submitted through the Division Chairs. Requests not granted during a given round of allocations are kept on file and automatically considered during the next round.
New faculty: Each new tenure track faculty member will receive an initial allocation of 1,000.
Continuing faculty: Each faculty member will be allocated $700 for OST.
Accrual: Each faculty member will be allowed to accrue up to $2,100 for out of state travel. Once $2,100 has been accrued, no further allocation will be made, until the total accrual drops below $2,100. The subsequent allocation will still be subject to the $2,100 maximum accrual. Upon the retirement, resignation, or termination of the faculty member, the unexpended balance will remain with UMM and cannot be paid out as a cash benefit.
Deadline: Ongoing
Travel Supplements
The Faculty Center for Learning and Teaching is making every effort to encourage participation in the conferences of the Collaboration and other organizations dedicated to promoting excellence in teaching in the discipline or in higher education. To that end, a limited number of travel supplements in the amount of $100 are available to help pay for registration fees and/or other costs incurred by faculty while attending this type of conference. Applications are available at the Center, located in the East Annex.
Deadline: Ongoing
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
This program offers financial awards to undergraduates for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member. While providing students with a unique educational experience, faculty advance their own professional work with the able assistance of a qualified undergraduate.
UROP is particularly helpful to faculty who lack funding for research assistance from other sources. All faculty of the University of Minnesota, whatever their college, rank, or nature of appointment, may sponsor UROP students. Although faculty occasionally sponsor more than one student at a time, especially on team projects, it may be necessary during some award periods to limit the number of UROP students per individual faculty member in the interest of distributing research assistance to as many faculty as possible.
Applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student. Awards include a student stipend of up to $1,400 as salary for actual time spent working on a project as well as up to $300 for supplies and expenses required by the project.
