Global conference visits UMM. Ninety delegates from over 40 countries visited UMM recently as part of the USDA Global Conference on Agricultural Biofuels. In 2009, the Annual Symposium on Small Towns, hosted by UMM's Center for Small Towns, will focus on Renewing Our Global Communities with "The Path to Energy Self-sufficiency: An International Symposium." Biomass groundbreaking!

More than 100 people attended the biomass groundbreaking ceremony on July 27, 2007, for the new biomass gasification facility to be constructed at the University of Minnesota, Morris. We invite you to enjoy these photos of visiting dignitaries and other participants.

Home Grown Economy Conference
In an effort to address and explore how local foods can be an economic development engine for rural communities, Congressman Collin Peterson sponsored a conference called "The Home Grown Economy: Foods from Local Farms as an Economic Development Tool" at UMM on April 2, 2007 (rescheduled from February 26, 2007).

    Horticulture Night a big success!

    This year's Horticulture Night on July 27, 2006, at the West Central Research and Outreach Center featured UMM Chef Chris Serio of Sodexho Campus Services demonstrating the preparation of locally produced foods. "It was like watching Emeril on the Food Network!" said UMM's Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Sandy Olson-Loy.

pic UMM and the West Central Research and Outreach Center presented posters and abstracts about renewable energy at the Initiative for Renewable Energy and Environment's 2nd Annual Research Symposium November 29, 2005 on the Twin Cities campus. The conference brought together the public and hosts speakers who discussed their efforts in researching renewable and environmental initiatives.

    The Initiative for Renewable Energy and Environment has contributed funds for both the wind turbine and the planned biomass facilities on the Morris campus. Click the image at left to see a larger version of UMM's poster for the symposium.





    UMM receives federal funding for biomass development
    UMM, with its tall prairie grass and blue prairie sky, is quickly gaining ground as a place for biomass research. UMM was one of 11--and the only small town, liberal arts college--to snag a grant from the federal government's Biomass Research and Development Initiative. Read more.

    Cory Marquart, a scientist with the University of Minnesota Renewable Research and Demonstration Center at Morris is quoted in the article titled, "Power of the Future - Tomorrow's farmers and ranchers will provide food, fiber... and fuel."
