Morris Healthy Eating

Morris Healthy Eating is working to make fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods more available and accessible on the University of Minnesota Morris campus, in Morris, and in Stevens County. Established in 2009, the initiative links leaders from our food, healthcare, and educational systems with partnering organizations, agencies, and businesses to make the healthy choice the easy choice in our community.

Why do we need Morris Healthy Eating?

  • Two-thirds of Minnesotans are overweight or obese, the highest percentage in our history.
  • One of every three Morris college students is overweight, obese, or very obese.
  • Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are now the second leading cause of death and disease in the US, contributing to obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes.
  • Adult obesity-related health conditions could cost Minnesota an additional $3.7 billion annually by 2020, if trends continue.
  • Research shows increased physical activity, coupled with eating more fruits and vegetables can:
    • help manage diabetes and weight;
    • lower cholesterol and blood pressure;
    • help protect against heart disease and some cancers;
    • reduce the likelihood of heart attack or stroke.
