New Articles & Books Search

Posted by Peter Bremer on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014

Have you ever wished there was a way to search for both articles and books at the same time through Briggs Library? Well, now there is. You may have noticed a new Pounce search tab on the library home page. It’s called “Articles & Books” and searches across many, but not all, Briggs databases for full text articles in addition to print books, e-books, DVDs, and more. Because it's still new we consider it to be in beta and could change a bit in the future.

If you're interested in watching a brief video tutorial on how to use the new search tab please see the link below. There's also more detailed information listed.

Articles & Books Search Tutorial

Using the Articles and Books search tab

After you click on the “Articles & Books” tab type a keyword into the search box. Items in the results list will have an icon indicating whether it is a book, an article or something else. Click on “View It” to see the full text of an ebook or article. If you are off-campus you will be asked to type in your x.500 username and password in order to access full text. If it’s a print book the item’s call number location will be listed.

You can easily narrow your results by choosing from a variety of options in the left-hand column such as “Material Type”, “Date”, “Subject”, and “Author”. Just want a print book? Choose “Available on Shelf”. Need even more search options? Try the “Advanced Search” link located near the center of the screen.

Keep in mind that some databases are not included in “Articles and Books”. To search EBSCO resources, please "Sign in" to Pounce with your x.500 using the link located near the upper right hand corner. Note that even when signed in, narrowing your results by using the refine options will eliminate unique EBSCO resources. To see the most currently available resources, and to further refine search parameters using more powerful search tools, we still recommend accessing the databases directly through the library's A-Z list.

Clicking the checkbox "Expand beyond library collections" on the left will enable searching for articles and books available through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

If you have any questions or comments about the new "Articles & Books" search please ask a Briggs librarian.
