Returning Materials
Circulation Services of Rodney A. Briggs Library strive to establish
and implement policies to ensure the efficient and consistent availability
of materials for University of Minnesota, Morris faculty, staff, and
students and to offer those not associated with UMM a means of using the
resources of the library.
The Circulation desk is located on the main (2nd floor) of
Briggs Library. At this service point, you may check out, renew, and return
materials, make directional inquiries, utilize reserve materials, pick up
interlibrary loan items, learn how to place holds or recalls on materials checked out to another patron, or check the lost and
found box. Also, community residents may apply for library cards at the
circulation desk.
CHECKING OUT MATERIALS
Students, faculty and staff of UMM may check out library materials by
presenting a valid U-Card. Community residents may obtain a library card
that will enable them to check out materials from Briggs Library.
No materials will be checked out unless a valid card is presented.
Borrowers with outstanding overdue materials or unpaid fines exceeding $10.00
will not be permitted to check out materials.
The library has open stacks. The exceptions are the Music Score
Collection which requires checking out keys at the Circulation Desk, and the UMM Archives and West Central Minnesota Historical Research Center
collections located on the fourth floor. Reference Books, Periodicals, Rare Books and holdings of the UMM Archives and special collection do not circulate. Also, inquire
at the Circulation desk for older issues of journals or books which Summon indicate as being held in Storage.
COMMUNITY RESIDENTS
It is not necessary to be affiliated with the University of Minnesota,
Morris to use or check out Briggs Library materials. Community Residents
may apply for cards at the Circulation desk by completing a registration
form. Parental signatures are required for applicants under the age of 18.
This card must be presented when checkouts are requested. Interlibrary
Loan services are restricted to those affiliated with UMM or members of the Rodney A. Briggs Library Associates.
FACULTY PROXY CARDS
Faculty members working with student assistants, MAP
and directed-study students may apply for a faculty proxy card. After
completing the appropriate form indicating the names of authorized students,
a proxy library card will be created and kept on file at the Circulation
desk. Names of authorized borrowers will be listed on the back of the card,
along with the time period for which the authorization is valid. Students
utilizing this card should expect to present identification. Materials
will be due at the end of each term and the same fine and replacement
policies will apply as if the faculty member had personally checked out the
items.
FINES
The Campus Assembly Library Committee determined the amount of
fines several years ago. Again, in 1996, a campus wide survey and
consultation with the Academic Services Advisory Committee endorsed
maintaining the following fine policy:
- $1/day per item, with a maximum of $10 per item
- $2/hour per reserve item with a maximum of $10 per item
- Maximum fine for all materials due on one day is $75
There is a six-day grace period after the due date, during which no
fines are charged. However, if the materials are not returned within the six
days, fines will accrue starting with the due date.
Anyone with overdue items or unpaid fines loses library privileges,
including interlibrary loan service, until the items are returned and the
fines paid. Administrative holds on grades, transcripts, and registration
are applied for outstanding overdue materials or fines.
Overdue notices are sent out as a courtesy, but it is the responsibility
of the borrower to be cognizant of due dates.
HOLDS AND RECALLS
Recalls can be placed on items that are currently checked out by another borrower and that have been checked out for at least 14 days. From SUMMON, simply click on the "recall" link option in the item record.
You will be prompted to log-in into Your Account. After you hit "Submit" your recall
request should appear in "Your Account". The immediate borrower will be notified of the shortened loan period by email and has 7 days to
return the recalled item. Items that are returned after the due date are subject to overdue fines.
Holds can only be placed by library personnel. If you are interested in placing a hold on a currently checked out item to fix
your place in the waiting que simply ask for assistance at the circulation or reference desk. Someone will be glad to assist you.
Questions can be directed to Jayne Blodgett.
Picking Up and Returning Interlibrary Loan Items
Pick up and check out your requested interlibrary loan items checked out at
the circulation desk. You will be notified by ILL when an item is ready.
The date due will be printed on the item's paper sleeve. Return the item to
the circulation desk by the due date.
LIBRARY CARDS
UMM students, faculty and staff must use their U-Card to check out
library materials. In the case of loss or theft of this card, replacements
may be obtained at the U-Card office in Behmler Hall. Community residents
may complete a registration form at the main desk and receive a library card.
The signature of a parent or guardian is required for community borrowers
under the age of 18. All patrons are responsible for items checked out to
their unique bar code unless the library is notified of the theft or loss
of the card.

LOST AND UNRETURNED MATERIALS
The University of Minnesota libraries automation system usually sends out
notices at the time the item is due and one week later before sending out a bill for each item. This bill will
reflect the replacement cost as well as a $15.00 reprocessing fee for each
unreturned item. Fines are not charged when
the replacement and processing fees are paid. It is the responsibility of
the borrower to watch due dates stamped on the items in order to avoid late
penalties. There may be times when the notice system is inconsistent.
MICROFORM EQUIPMENT
The library owns two microform reader/printers. One, the Microform
Scanner 300, can scan images. In order to send files via email a
Dell wireless device must be checked out from the Circulation Desk and plugged
into the USB port in back of the computer. Prints must be made using a Cougar
Cash Card on this machine. Both microform machines are located near the photocopiers
on the main floor of the library. If you need assistance please ask at the
Reference or Circulation Desk. Each is equipped to read both microfiche and
microfilm. UMM personnel wishing to charge prints to departmental budgets
are asked to bring their CUFS number and sign a log indicating number of prints
made. In addition to the reader/printers on the main floor, there is a
microfiche reader in the government documents area on the fourth
floor.
NEW ARRIVALS SHELVES
New materials are shelved on "New Arrivals Shelves for a limited
amount of time
in order that library users may have a chance to browse new acquisitions.
These new books are shelved on the bookcase near the exit gate.
Recent acquisitions may be checked out with the usual loan period in effect.

beyond the Circulation desk. The cost of a copy (either 8.5" x 11" or,
upon changing the size indicator, 11" x 14") is $.10 per page.
Normally, nickels, dimes or quarters may be used. Copiers have coin or
Cougar Cash attachments for payment. Inquire at the circulation desk for
change for paper bills of small demoninations.
PRINTING
There are two main ways to print in Briggs Library. You can either print using your
Cougar Cash Card or by paying cash.
To use the Cougar Cash option you must first buy a card. There is a Cougar Cash machine located in the library. Cards cost $1.00.
You may insert $1, $5, $10 or $20 to put value on your card. The card can then be used for printing as well as making photocopies and
microform prints in Briggs Library as well as other locations across campus. Choose "Cougar Card B & W" from the print menu. You will be prompted to type in a name for your print
job. Insert your card into the Cougar machine located at the circulation desk or in the third floor computer lab. All print jobs will be listed. Choose your print job.
Value will be substracted from your card. Cost is 5 cents a page. If you need a color print choose "Cougar Card Color" and follow the same
steps. Cost is $1.00 a page.
The other way to print is by simply paying cash. From the print menu choose "Library Cash Printing". Print jobs can be picked up at the
circulation desk. Cost is 5 cents a page.
PRIVACY
Briggs Library adheres to the state and national regulations concerning
the right to privacy of library borrowers as to materials used and
checked out. Library personnel will not divulge any such borrowing
information, other than giving the date due for an item.
RETURNING MATERIALS
Return materials to the Circulation desk of the library.
You may do this either by placing them on the desk, or placing
them in the wooden slot on the left side of the lobby as you
exit the library. There is also a book return outside
the main door of the library that may be utilized when the library is
closed.
