Library Circulation Student Assistant Job Description

Pay rate: $ 7.10 per hour
Supervisor: LeAnn Dean

General Summary:
Staffed each of the 94 hours that the library is open, the circulation desk is often the first contact that library users have with the library and its staff members must represent the library in a positive manner. Punctuality and dependability are essential components of this position.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Staff circulation desk
2) Charge and discharge materials
3) Respond to directional queries for information (phone and on-site)
4) Take and transfer messages accurately
5) Adhere to library policies and procedures
6) Service printer, microform and copier equipment (toner and paper replacement)
7) Shelve, retrieve and shift library materials
8) Ensure correct shelving order of assigned section of library
9) Assist in opening or closing of library (specific shifts)
10) Assist in maintaining the appearance of the library, keeping it neat and orderly
11) Assist with general library duties as required
12) Required to take weekend, evening and final examination week shifts

Minimum/Essential Qualifications Needed to Perform Job:

Willingness and ability to work an established schedule; accuracy with alpha/numberic sequences; attention to detail; ability to use computers and a library automation system; ability to work without close supervision; dependability; keyboarding skills; good interpersonal communication skills; capable of reading labels for shelving and shelf-reading; physical ability to stand, bend and lift books; ability to move loaded book carts; sufficient English language skills to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate clearly with library users.

Library Circulation Student Peer Supervisor Job Description


Note: This position is currently filled.

Classification & Title: Arts/Communication 2703
Pay rate: $ 8.00 per hour
Supervisor: LeAnn Dean

General Summary: Weekend and Evening peer supervisors are experienced student library assistants who see to the smooth operation of the circulation department and library in the absence of permanent library staff. The two peer supervisors will be responsible for alternating weeks throughout the academic year.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Perform all duties and responsibilities attributed to the circulation student assistant position;
2) Supervise and monitor the library in the absence of permanent staff;
3) Assist in student employee evaluation process;
4) Ensure staffing of evening & weekend shifts by arranging for replacements or, as a last resort, personally filling in for regularly scheduled student assistants;
5) Attend circulation department meetings as scheduled
6) Work with Circulation Manager in maintaining Circulation Procedures and Policy Manual.
7) Record and report problems and unusual situations to library director and circulation manager.

Minimum/Essential Qualifications Needed to Perform Job:

One year Briggs Library experience; ability to work in a professional manner with coworkers and library patrons; ability to supervise others; excellent communication skills; excellent attendance record; computer skills;

Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of circulation module of the Aleph automation system as well as general computer applications.
