EndNote Description and Download

EndNote is a bibliographic software licensed by the University of Minnesota, Morris Briggs Library for use by current students, staff and faculty of UMM. When an employee or student leaves UMM they are instructed to uninstall EndNote from their computer.

Individuals may download and install EndNote on up to three personal computers or flash drive devices. Because portable storage devices are somewhat unstable it is recommended that EndNote be saved to a computer as well. Use EndNote to search online databases, organize references and create bibliographies. You can even insert citations directly into your manuscript using the Cite While You Write tool. It all starts with creating libraries and then building your reference sources around specific topics or projects. When you're ready to generate a bibliography or insert footnotes in your paper EndNote will have thousands of citation and journal styles for you to choose from. You can also customize EndNote to reflect the databases and styles that are of the most use.

For your convenience EndNote is installed on all UMM computer lab machines. [The Media Lab in the HFA will be equipped with EndNote by the start of fall semester 2009]

Currently, the Windows download is version X3.0.1 and the Mac download is version X3.0.1. These were current as of 09/09. If you have already have an earlier version of EndNote uninstall it before downloading the new EndNote X3. As long as you didn't save your EndNote files in your EndNote Program folder (this is not the default) you should be okay. Your Library will transfer over to EndNote X3.

How do I learn more?
Check out the following EndNote Summary & Video Tutorial. You can also read the fairly detailed EndNote Getting Started Guide for Windows and Mac. The guide can be downloaded and printed off as well. For a more thorough and complete description of EndNote for Windows please consult the User's Guide. The Mac User's Guide is available as well. If you still have questions please ask our Instruction Coordinator Jayne Blodgett or our Reference Coordinator Peter Bremer. Both would be glad to help. We also will be offering hands-on tutorial sessions during fall semester. Watch this page for details as well as your email inbox for dates and times.

Upgrading

If you are upgrading from an earlier EndNote version it is highly recommended, but not required, that you uninstall any earlier version of EndNote before installing EndNote X3. If you have custom styles, import filters, and connection files you will want to back-them up. If you install the new version without uninstalling the existing one you will be given options on what to do with your custom EndNote files. Upgrading will NOT delete your EndNote Libraries. Please see p. 11-20 of the Windows Getting Started Guide for more upgrading and install information as well as p. 24-26 for uninstall details.

Updating

To update EndNote after you have installed the currently available downloadable version simply click on Help from your EndNote Library screen and then Program Updates. Follow the steps. Your EndNote library and styles will remain intact. For more details see p. 24 of the Windows Getting Started Guide.

Connection Files

Download the University of Minnesota, Morris library catalog connection file and search SUMMON from within your EndNote library. After downloading the connection file titled "U Minnesota-Morris", simply save the file to your EndNote Connections folder located in your EndNote folder found within MyDocuments. An alternate pathway might also be Local Disk/Program Files/EndNote/Connections. The easiest way to save the file is simply double-click on the "U Minnesota-Morris" connection file icon from your Desktop. Go to file and choose Save As from the drop-down menu. You can rename the file as you wish. Click Save. Note: You must first have the EndNote program installed.
