Course Reserve Services
Article Form
Book Form [Use for books, CD's, and DVD's/videos]
Excerpt Form [Use for a portion of a book, play or short story]
The library offers two types of access for Course Reserves:
- Reserve Desk Access (main desk of library)
- Electronic Access
Reserve Request Forms
Online forms may be submitted at any time.
Paper forms are available at the Circulation Desk.
A separate reserve form should be completed for each item to be placed on
reserve, and for each chapter within a book. Forms from
previous terms should not be reused. It is important to fill out each
form in entirety, including bibliographic information for photocopies.
Incomplete forms require further interaction with the faculty member and result in additional processing time.
The library will accept books, photocopied articles, other printed materials
and audio-video materials for inclusion in the reserve collection. Some
items regarding University policies or general UMM information are on
permanent reserve so that they can be accessed easily by the
UMM community.
All items on Electronic or Print Reserve must conform to copyright law. For general information please go to Copyright.
Specific questions about reserve items and copyright should be directed to Jayne Blodgett, Briggs Library Circulation Manager.
Electronic Reserve
Faculty are encouraged to utilize electronic reserve for articles, handouts, or
chapters of books. This option enables more students to use
the reserve items simultaneously and gives them the option of access
from any networked computer. Check the appropriate box on the request form
to use this option. Check with Circulation Manager Jayne Blodgett if you have questions
about the scanability of the reading and about expected processing time
as well as to learn the password that students will need to access the
course page and the readings. Because file size is of concern in
making the e-reserves usable for varying computer sophistication and age
used by students, it is recommended that readings be broken down into
individual chapters (using the chapter title as the title of the reading)
with a maximum limit of approximately 25 pages per file. Longer chapters
can be broken down into more than one file.
Electronic reserve is a link on the library's home page. After clicking on
the general electronic reserve heading, students use the pull-down menus
for either instructor or discipline. Within each discipline there is a
listing by specific course.
Print Reserves
Print Course Reserves are held at the circulation desk and are available for
check out for either two or four hours. Fines are applicable on items not returned
by the due time. To look up items click on Print
Reserves.
Searches can be made by instructor name or class title. Verify if an item is
available by clicking on the "Availability" link on the right-hand
side.

Course Reserve Lists and Call Numbers
Students using Print Reserve services need call number information when
requesting items. Print Reserve items have their own database accessible from the main library website or on
the SUMMON site. Called Print Reserves, it enables searching by title of item, course number, course name, Discipline,
or instructor.
-
Personal Copies for Library Reserve Desk service
It is common practice for faculty to place personal copies on reserve.
It should be noted that barcodes and labels will be applied to these items.
-
Interlibrary Loan Materials
Interlibrary loan protocols prohibit the library from placing books or
materials borrowed from other libraries on reserve. We are also unable to put licensed or rental items on
Print Reserve.
