Alumni, faculty and friends of the University of Minnesota, Morris will return to campus September 20, 21, and 22 for Homecoming 2002. Community members are also invited to campus to renew friendships and celebrate the annual event.
Highlights of the festivities include the dedication of the remodeled West Wing of the Science Building and an Awards Dinner honoring Cougar Hall of Fame inductees and Distinguished Alumni Award recipients. A parade and pre-game tailgate party will reflect this year's Homecoming theme, "City Meets Country: Gettin' Down on the Farm."
Homecoming kicks off Thursday, September 19, with a Pep Fest at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Edson Auditorium. At the event, student leaders will be honored for their contributions to campus life.
Alumni events begin Friday with the UMM Alumni Association Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner, at 5:30 p.m. at Turtle Mountain Cafe in the Student Center.
The evening includes presentation of the Alumni Association's first Distinguished Alumni Awards. Alumni being honored are Robert Gandrud, '64, of Glenwood, retired president, CEO and chairman of the board of Lutheran Brotherhood; Bruce Johnson, '71, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., founder and president of Porchlight Entertainment; and Lue Her, '97, of St. Paul, educator and program manager of AmeriCorps Get Ready.
In addition, two UMM alumni and a longtime staff member will be inducted into the Cougar Hall of Fame. Athletes Shane Pribyl '91, and Stacy Rust Martig '93, will be honored, along with retired Cougar Bus driver Art Durkee, of Morris, who drove the athletes' bus for more than 25 years.
The public is invited to attend the Alumni Awards Dinner. Tickets are $15 per person and may be reserved by calling the UMM Alumni Office at 320-589-6066. Free parking is available. The deadline for making dinner reservations is September 18.
Also on Friday, the UMM women's volleyball team will play the University of Minnesota-Duluth, at 7 p.m. in the UMM PE Center.
Homecoming events continue Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with a KUMM reunion and Tower Dedication at the KUMM studios in the Student Center.
The dedication of the West Wing of the Science Building will be held at 11 a.m. in the remodeled lobby. The $8-million renovation completes the three-phase Science Building project.
At 11:30 a.m., the Homecoming Parade begins on the Campus Mall. The parade will travel west on Fourth Street to Columbia Avenue, then north to Seventh Street, past East Side Park to Main Street, returning to campus on Second Street.
At noon, a pre-game tailgate party will be held adjacent to the football field. Student groups will serve a variety of country fair-style foods, including chili, turkey legs, and brats. Rain site is the concourse of the P.E. Center.
Following the tailgate party, the UMM Cougars meet the UMD Bulldogs in football. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. Game tickets are available at the gate.
After the game, there will be a reception for alumni and current and former faculty and staff at LaFave House, 305 College Ave. Refreshments will be served.
At 5 p.m., the UMM women meet Bemidji in volleyball at the UMM P.E. Center.
Homecoming concludes Sunday with an afternoon concert. The UMM Band and Chorus will perform at 2 p.m. in the HFA Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
