The University of Minnesota, Morris has announced a new study that will explore alternative energy sources for campus use.
The study will research aggressively the options of using local biomass for energy production. Interest in the study stemmed from discussion between the school district and campus to stabilize energy costs and keep the value of energy production additional opportunities to explore this relationship.
The Morris campus, with the support from the West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC), Otter Tail Power Company, the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC), and Central Administration within the University of Minnesota, will conduct the study. The EERC, located in Grand Forks, N.D., is a nationally recognized leader in sustainable energy. Preliminary work was conducted by WCROC.
According to UMM Chancellor Sam Schuman, "It is 'just right' that an excellent liberal arts college should be exploring this important new technology: it is cutting edge; it is practical; it is socially and environmentally responsible; and it would be a distinct benefit to the agricultural and industrial economy of our region."
The EERC will assess the biomass resource potential within 100 miles of the campus, determine the most promising applications, and provide engineering economic analysis for the conversion of biomass to energy. The study is scheduled to be completed in March 2003.
