Area residents are invited to gather on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Morris at 8:46 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, in remembrance of the events of a year ago. The timing of the gathering reflects the time (EDT) of the first attack on the World Trade Center. Chancellor Sam Schuman will provide brief opening remarks followed by a period of quiet reflection.
In the event of inclement weather, the observance will be held in the Science building Atrium.
On KUMM campus radio, 89.7 FM:
KUMM will pay respects to the casualties of last year's tragedy by airing a
reading of the Gettysburg Address and a few moments of silence, several
times throughout the day. The Gettysburg Address will be read by 10 UMM
community members.
In the Morris Community:
On Wednesday evening, September 11, an ecumenical prayer service will be
held at 7:30 p.m at Assumption Catholic Church, 209 East Third Street. The
service will include a candle-lighting ceremony by public service employees
in uniform. The event is sponsored by Assumption Catholic Church, Faith
Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Church, Newman Center Catholic Campus
Ministries, and Lutheran Campus Ministries. Refreshments will be served
following the service.
Nationally:
These observance are part of a national observance, articulated in Public
Law 107-89, December 18, 2001 by the 107th Congress of the United States.
"Patriot Day (September 11) is an observance, not a
holiday. It remembers the hijacking of four civilian aircraft on that day
in 2001, resulting in the death of all on board, the destruction with huge
loss of life of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and
damage to the Pentagon outside Washington DC, with further loss of life. It
is intended to honor all those individuals who lost their lives as a
result of these terrorist attacks. The President is requested to issue each
year a proclamation calling on state and local governments and the people
of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate programs and
activities. Flags are to be flown at half mast and the people of the United
States are called upon to observe a moment of silence." http://www.holidayfestival.com
