The Theatre Discipline at the University of Minnesota Morris Announces its 2002-2003 Season

A rollicking Irish family drama that touches the heart, a humorously complicated romantic triangle among a man, his wife and his dog, and the annual children's theatre production comprise what is certain to be a delightful 2002-2003 theatrical season for the Division of Humanities theater discipline, at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

The season kicks off with a rousing Irish flair this fall with Brian Friel's "Dancing at Lughnasa," performing October 31--November 2 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on November 2 at 2 p.m. Set in rural Ireland in 1936, the play follows the lives of the five Mundy sisters and their daily struggles and triumphs. The audience will cheer as the sisters persevere through their struggles with hope, love and of course dancing. "Dancing at Lughnasa" will be directed by assistant professor of theater Ray Schultz, with set and lighting design by Tap Payne, professor of theater. UMM student Kaitlyn Maurer will serve as costume designer for this production.

No need to worry about plans for Valentine's Day this year! The whimsical romantic comedy "Sylvia" by A.R. Gurney performs February 13-15 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on February 15 at 2:00 p.m. This play follows a married couple caught in a classic romantic triangle with a comic twist: the third point in the triangle is the man's dog. This nutty romantic comedy is perfect for a fun first date or just a Valentine's Day giggle fest with friends. Assistant Professor of Theatre Siobhan Bremer will be taking the reins as director of this production, while senior theater major Sara VanBenschoten will be designing costumes as part of her senior project.

The annual children's show is sure to entertain both children and adults alike. This fun-filled production will be performed April 11 at 7pm and April 12 at 1pm for the public, with additional student matinees April 10-16, 2003. With a title that will soon be announced, this perennial favorite draws thousands of elementary school children from across the entire West Central region. Watch for further announcements.

In addition to these main stage productions, the theatre discipline will spotlight students in a variety of other performances. Two senior theatre majors will showcase their talents in public performances this fall as part of their respective senior projects. Peter Barrett will serve as producer, director, and actor in an Improvisational Comedy Show that will also feature a number of UMM student performers. An acting recital featuring monologues and scenes from several different plays is the culminating project for senior Tim Rutten. Watch for further announcements regarding performance dates and times. UMM's student theatre group, the Meiningens, offers various opportunities for student performance throughout the year, and they will be announcing their season at a later date.

Ticket prices for "Dancing at Lughnasa," "Sylvia," and Meiningens productions are $5 for general admission and $4 for student and senior citizens. Special discounted rates are available for groups of six or more. All seats for our Annual Children's show are $2.
