Great Convocation Series Opens

The second annual University of Minnesota "Great Conversations" series will open with the topic "The War With Germs" on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. The program will be broadcast via television in the Alumni Room of the Student Center at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

This first conversation features Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the U's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, former Minnesota State Epidemiologist and the nation's leading expert on the potential risk of man-made epidemics. Following the attacks of September 11th, he was appointed to a national advisory board on bioterrorism. He will be joined by Judith Miller, investigative reporter for The New York Times and expert on Middle Eastern affairs. She is the author of Germs: Biological Weapons and America's Secret War and was part of the team that contributed to The Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of Osama bin Laden following September 11.

Back by popular demand, the six-part "Great Conversations" pairs leading University faculty with eminent world authorities to explore and illuminate the subjects in today's headlines. Each conversation will last about an hour, followed by a short question and answer period. Refreshments served.

The series is broadcast from the Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota West Bank campus. While there is a charge for the series in the Twin Cities, it is free and open to the campus and community in Morris.
