High School students will visit UMM during Education Minnesota break Nearly 200 high school students are scheduled to visit UMM during the Education Minnesota [formerly MEA] break October 17-18, hosted by the Office of Admissions at UMM. Admissions staff, as well as other UMM faculty and staff,will meet with prospective students and their families during each of the sessions.
Concert Band Chamber Concert
Members of the UMM Concert band will perform Friday, October 18th, 7:30 p.m. in Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall. The concert features the members of the UMM Concert Band playing in chamber ensembles under the direction of Nathaniel Johnson. Admission is: General-$3.00, Students and Senior Citizens-$1.00.
Final Days of "Body of Clay, Soul of Fire"
There are only a few days left to view the work of internationally known master potter Richard Bresnahan in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibit, "Body of Clay, Soul of Fire: Richard Bresnahan and Art from the St. John's Pottery," closes Saturday, October 19th. The Gallery is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Parking is available in the visitor's area in the North Parking Lot. Student Recitals
Two music students will perform recitals on Sunday, October 20th. Monica Haynes will perform on piano and Heidi Hendrickson will perform a voice recital at 7:30pm in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall. Monica will be favoring us with Beethoven's popular "Sonata Pathetique" while Heidi will sing Gilbert and Sullivan arias and a selection from Mozart's "Don Giovanni."
Midwest Philosophy Colloquium
Michael McKenna, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Ithaca College in New York will be the second speaker in the Annual Midwest Philosophy Colloquium. His address is titled, "Free Will, Agency Meaning and the Conditions of Morally Responsible Agency." He will develop an "expressive" account of free will and responsible agency according to which attitudes such as praise, blame, resentment, and indignation are incipient forms of communication. The presentation will be held Monday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m., at Federated Church, Morris. This is free and open to the public. Annual Driggs Distinguished Lecture
Iman Ghazalla, a research fellow at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, will deliver the annual O. T. Driggs Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the HFA Recital Hall on the University of Minnesota, Morris campus. Her topic will be "Women and Islam: Contemporary Perspectives." The lecture is free and open to the public.
Great Conversations
U of M Professor Margo Garrett and Joseph Polisi, President of the Juilliard School and National Medal of Arts recipient, will be participating in the second installment of the "Great Conversations" Series" on the topic, "Future of Music Education," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 22nd. Their presentation is in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the U's School of Music. The series is broadcast from the Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota West Bank campus and will be shown via television in the Alumni Room of the Student Center at the University of Minnesota, Morris. It is free and open to the community.
Pride of the Prairie Fall Feast
You're invited to celebrate the harvest season with a meal of regional cuisine at the University of Minnesota, Morris on Thursday, October 24th. The Pride of the Prairie Fall Feast will feature home grown food and music in a community celebration. The meal will be served from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. in the UMM Food Services Building, on East 2nd Street, across the street from the RFC. Free parking is available in all campus parking lots. Guides will be available to direct guests parking in the South or East Parking lots off 2nd Street. Tickets for the event are $10 for adults, $6 for off campus students and children, and ages 5 and under eat free. Tickets will also be on sale the week of the event in the Student Center (11:30am to 1:30pm), at Pomme de Terre Food Coop in Morris, and at the door.
Trick or Can
Students from the University of Minnesota, Morris will go door to door through Morris collecting cans and/or boxes of food as part of the second annual "Trick or Can" event on Tuesday October 28th from 5-7 p.m. The event is a food drive for the Stevens County Food shelf. A rollicking Irish family drama is the first performance of the theatre season Brian Friel's "Dancing at Lughnasa," is the first production of the season to be offered by the theatre discipline. Set in rural Ireland in 1936, the play follows the lives of the five Mundy sisters and their daily struggles and triumphs. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, October 31--November 2, with a 2:00 p.m. Saturday matinee. Ticket prices are $5 for general admission and $4 for student and senior citizens. Cougar Sports
Tuesday, October 14 was the first day of practice for the Cougar men's and women's basketball teams. The Cougar men's and women's basketball teams open the 2002-03 seasons on the road at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN on November 22. The home opener for both squads is November 23 when they host Mayville State.
But the fall sports season isn't over yet. The Cougar football team hosts Northern State in one of their last home games on Saturday, October 19th at 1:30p.m. The Volleyball team is on the road on the 19th, traveling to Winona for a 6 p.m. game versus the Warriors. The Cougars are home vs. Southwest State on Wednesday, October 23, with the JV match up at 5:00 p.m., and varsity action at 7:00 p.m. in the UMM P.E. Center. Thursday, October 24th is fan appreciation day for the UMM Soccer team. The Cougars host Nebraska-Omaha at 3pm.
