Annual Driggs Distinguished Lecture

Iman Ghazalla, a research fellow at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, will deliver the annual O. T. Driggs Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Her topic will be "Women and Islam: Contemporary Perspectives." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Ms. Ghazalla has studied at the American University in Cairo and at the University of California at Los Angeles, where she has also taught. At the Humphrey Institute she has taught graduate courses on women's Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and international public affairs. She has conducted field research in Morocco on community development and NGOs and in the Middle East for the United Nations Anti-Poverty Agenda. In 1994 she was a fellow at Yale's Program on Nonprofit Organizations, doing research on religious NGOs in Egypt. She has also taught at Macalester College, served as a researcher at Cornell, and served as a consultant and interpreter for the Minnesota Public Schools.

Since 1985, the annual Driggs Lecture has brought visiting speakers to campus on topics relating to history, liberal arts, and public affairs. It honors the memory of Professor O. T. Driggs, who taught history at UMM from 1963 until his death in 1989 and also served as chair of the Division of the Social Sciences. The lecture is sponsored by an endowment, by the UMM Alumni Association, and by the Minnesota Humanities Commission.
