Opening October 28th Humanities Fine Arts Gallery, University of Minnesota, Morris Campus. October 28 December 7, 2002 Opening Reception October 28 at 7:30 pm.
The second major exhibit in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery at the University of Minnesota, Morris will be a retrospective of the work of UMM faculty, Fred W. Peterson.
Peterson initiated both the studio art and art history disciplines on the campus in 1961. After 1973, the development of curriculum and faculty in these areas directed his primary efforts as a professor of art history. He did, however, continue work in studio arts as a significant party of his study and research as a faculty of the University.
This exhibit looks back at the development of his work as an artist and also demonstrates how creating works of art relates to his research and writing in art history. Peterson explains that "making drawings, paintings, and sculptures is a process of asking questions about the ways we perceive our world, how we relate to one another, and how we create meaning from our shared experiences."
The exhibit includes 60 works drawings, paintings, and sculptures that document the artist's process of visual enquiry during a period of almost 40 years. Traditional and abstract landscapes present his interpretations of life in the prairie space of western Minnesota. Representations of rural architecture farmhouses and out buildings depict major features of the agricultural landscape and directly relate to the artist's research in vernacular architecture. Other works in watercolor painting, collage, and sculpture present the artist's examination of how structure and order relate to qualities of chance and randomness in visual form as well as in human experience.
An opening reception will be held in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery on Monday, October 28th at 7:30 p.m.
The Gallery will be open from 9:00 am-8:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am -6pm Friday and from 1:00-5:00 pm Saturday. Parking is available in the visitors' area in the North Parking Lot.
