Rose Ensemble Performs in Morris on November 8

Exquisite Gregorian chant, Renaissance and modern vocal music comes to=20 Morris for the third event in the 2002-03 University of Minnesota, Morris Performing Arts Series. The Rose Ensemble will present "Slavic Wonders" on Friday, November 8th at 7:30 p.m. at Assumption Catholic Church.

Founded in January 1996 by artistic director Jordan Sramek, the Rose Ensemble has enjoyed a prestigious artist residency at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis since 1997. The group is not affiliated with any organized religion but performs in churches for the resonant acoustics that provide listeners with the most authentic experience. Assumption Church of Morris provides the perfect historic and acoustic venue for this soaring performance.

The Rose Ensemble's performance will take you to ancient Poland and Krakow, where mysterious chants, psalms, and joyful carols are mingled with tales of saints and folk of good will. The evening features music from medieval and Renaissance Poland and Czechoslovakia, including motets from the Prague manuscript Codex Specialnik and several lovely spiritual songs extolling the virtues of various Slavic saints and heroes.

Assumption Church is located at the intersection of Colorado Avenue and East 3rd Street in Morris. The Park and Ride service from Willie's parking lot is not running for this event as there is ample parking at the church. Assumption Church is handicapped accessible, with an elevator located on the east side of the building.

Other performances scheduled as part of the 2002-03 UMM Performing Arts Series are: National Theater of the Deaf presentation of "Oh, Figaro," January 31, 2003; Lily Cai Chinese Dance Co., March 21, 2003.

Primary funding for this Series is provided by University of Minnesota, Morris students. The Series is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets can be purchased by phone with a credit card through the Office of Student Activities, 320-589-6080. For more information about the 2002-03 Performing Arts Series, visit their web site at http://www.morris.umn.edu/stuorgs/CAC/Arts/
