The Best, the Worst and the Greatest as part of "An Evening of Superlatives" at UMM

On a chilly fall evening, what could be better than curling up with a good book? How about hearing some of the finest readers in Morris share their favorite excerpts from the greatest books ever written?

If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, plan to attend "An Evening of Superlatives," at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 14th at the Rodney A. Briggs Library at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

"An Evening of Superlatives" will feature ten readings and a short performance by a string quartet. The list of contributors includes Sam Schuman, Carol Wilcox, Nancy Carpenter, Jay Fier, Fritz Schwaller, Ken Crandall, Dwight Purdy, Jim Togeas, Roland Guyotte, and UMM students Rosie Kimball , Minda Johnson, Cari Olson, Diana Giordano, Adriane Raba and Brianna Oseland. Each selection represents a superlative---the best, the worst, most memorable or the greatest.

The event is hosted by the Rodney A. Briggs Library Associates, a fledgling organization working to bring together those friends of the University who love books, enjoy cultural pursuits, and believe in supporting one of the region's intellectual resources. The Chair of the Associates Steering Group, Anne Schwaller, says the group will need to do fundraising, but that will not be their only function. Schwaller also says there are many ways the Library Associates can assist, such as planning and hosting special events.

Briggs Library Director LeAnn Dean is excited about the prospect of an Associates group to enhance the activities and resources of the library. While she is quick to say that UMM has a good library, "compared to our peer institutions, we're comparatively young and small. We don't have the endowments and financial resources that many older institutions have. We're hoping that the Associates will make a difference, both in terms of events and building and collection improvements and that students, faculty, staff and community library users will all be the beneficiaries."

"An Evening of Superlatives" will be held on the first floor of the Rodney A. Briggs Library. Free parking will be available in any of the campus lots. There is no cost to attend.
