Events at UMM to Celebrate Native American Awareness Month

The Circle of Nations Indian Association (CNIA) at the University of Minnesota, Morris, is hosting several events in celebration of November as Native American Awareness month.

On Tuesday, November 12th, two speakers are scheduled. At 2:00 pm, Dana Tiger will give a presentation on "Artwork as a Healing Process." Dana Tiger is daughter of the acclaimed artist Jerome Tiger, and pursued her artistic skills as a way to know the man who died when she was five. Tiger became the youngest ever Master Artist at the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee, OK. Samples of her artwork will be on display and for sale. Her presentation will be in Edson Auditorium in the UMM Student Center.

At 7:00 pm, on November 12th, Lisa Tiger will give a presentation titled, "You can't tell by looking who has HIV." Lisa has had many triumphs in her life, but also many tragedies. Through it all, she has not only survived, but grown stronger in spirit and come to know her purpose in life. Lisa Tiger will also be speaking in Edson Auditorium.

You'll want to bring your children to see and hear Jackie Bird performing on November 26th. Bird will demonstrate Indian Hoop Dancing and perform Indian Blues Rock. Hoop Dancing has a different meaning for every tribe, but for Jackie Bird the dance is for healing. The hoops stand for the circle of life and in her performance she uses them to explain the story of creation. In all of her performances she has been praised for her ability to get the audience involved with her contemporary and traditional music, songs, and dances. Woven throughout Jackie's performance are the intricacies and beliefs of her Native American culture. Indian Blues Rock is a combination of English lyrics and Indian vocal traditions with rock drums, keyboard, guitar, and native instruments. Her performance will be on Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00 pm in the Edson Auditorium.

The public is welcome to attend all events. Parking is available in any of the campus lots. For more information, contact Nikkie Duin at (320) 589-2873 or Mike Miller at (320) 589-6094.
