National Theatre of the Deaf to Perform at UMM

UMM NEWS SERVICE -- The Tony Award-winning National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) will perform a rollicking romantic comedy as the next offering in this year's Performing Arts Series at the University of Minnesota, Morris. "Oh, Figaro," based on the classic farces "The Barber of Seville" and "The Marriage of Figaro," will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in Edson Auditorium of the UMM Student Center.

In addition to the group's evening performance, The Little Theatre of the Deaf will perform the same day at 9:30 a.m. at the Morris Area Elementary School.

Founded in 1967, NTD is the oldest continually producing and touring theater company in the United States. It was the first theater company to perform in all 50 states, has toured to all seven continents and in 32 countries. NTD's professional acting company is comprised of both deaf and hearing artists working together as an ensemble. The audience sees and hears every word through the NTD's signature performance style, which combines American Sign Language and the spoken word. This unique double-sensory experience has expanded the boundaries of theatrical expression and is considered to be the only new art form to be developed in the 20th century.

In addition to being the recipient of the prestigious Tony Award for Theatrical Excellence, NTD has long served as an artistic ambassador for the United States. Among the artists who have lent their talents to NTD are John Lithgow, Marcel Marceau, Colleen Dewhurst, Jason Robards, Sir Michael Redgrave, Chita Rivera, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn and Mary Martin.

The Little Theatre of the Deaf (LTD), the Children's Theatre Wing of the NTD, has performed in schools and at public theaters for over 30 years. Typically, an LTD show begins with an Introduction to Sign Language that acquaints the audience with American Sign Language, and also teaches them words to sign. Following the introduction, the company performs a variety of stories often based on a theme.

Primary funding for this series is provided by University of Minnesota, Morris students. The series is made possible by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature. In addition, this activity is sponsored in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
