UMM Black History Month Observance Features Renowned Educator, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu

Renowned educator Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu (Swahili for dependable and cheerful) will be the keynote speaker for Black History Month at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Kunjufu will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in Edson Auditorium of the UMM Student Center.

As president of African American Images, a communications company based in Chicago, Kunjufu lectures and conducts workshops for students, parents, teachers, community residents and churches. While one might not agree with the pragmatic solutions suggested by Kunjufu, it is difficult to question his commitment. A prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, he has authored Hip Hop vs. Maat: A Psycho-Social Analysis of Value; Motivating and Preparing Black Youth for Success; Lessons from History: A Celebration in Blackness; Black Economics: Solutions for Community and Economic Empowerment; and Good Brothers Looking for Good Sisters. His latest book is titled State of Emergency: We Must Save African American Males.

This event, free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Council Convocations Committee and the Black Student Union at UMM. Free parking is available in the campus North Parking Lot. Disability accommodations will be provided upon request. Please call the UMM disabilities coordinator at 320-589-6178.
